Oh, hi friends!

"I'm a musical theater writer now. This tweet is important for posterity."

I wrote this at the beginning of last year when I was not, technically, a musical theater writer. I had not written a musical. I had never even written words to music. And yet, I told myself I was. It felt delusional to even type it.

Yet somehow I knew that it was important to say out loud (or at least to Twitter). Because of one reason: The words you use to describe yourself matter more than the words others use to describe you.

A few months later, I had enough lyrics (still not set to music!) to audition and get into the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop…and actually realized how little I knew. Self-doubt! Worry! So many misaccented lyrics! And yet all I wanted was to learn.

Then, last night, after many months and ohmygoshsomuchwork, composer Kristoffer Bjarke and I presented our final first-year project: a 10-minute musical we called “Letters from May.”

It went very, very, very well. Like, beyond my wildest expectations well. Like, I’m floating.

Call yourself whatever you want to call yourself.

The words you use to describe yourself matter. They set your intention — and they pull you toward your future.

A Sondheim quote about writing that also applies to life:
"Put a show on. Write something. Put it on. Write something. Put it on. Write something. Put it on. Everybody gets discouraged. Just go do it. Write something. Put it on. Write something. Put it on."

Still from Laura Olin’s newsletter. Worth repeating two days in a row.

When I was a nervous wreck yesterday, I listened to this song on repeat for three full hours. It has never failed me.

You've got to get up every morning
With a smile in your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You're gonna find, yes you will
That you're beautiful, as you feel

Waiting at the station with a workday wind a-blowing
I've got nothing to do but watch the passers-by
Mirrored in their faces I see frustration growing
And they don't see it showing, why do I?

You've got to get up every morning
With a smile in your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You're gonna find, yes you will
That you're beautiful as you feel
