Enjoy Your Summer Vacation
Today is the last day of school! Hawthorn School District 73 wishes all Hawthorn families a wonderful summer vacation. We encourage you to keep your children reading over the summer by joining a summer library reading program, such as the reading club at Cook Memorial Public Library. Here are some tips to keep your students on a path to reading and learning success over the break. If you would like to keep up to date on what's going on at Hawthorn over the summer, please attend one of the Board of Education meetings on 6/10 and/or 6/24. They start at 7:00 p.m. We look forward to seeing everyone back on the first day of the 2019-2020 school year, which is Thursday, August 22.

Civil Way Day Starts Out with a Bang
Seventh grade students at Middle School North were treated to a day of Civil War reenactments, which started with a blast from a Civil War era cannon. They listened to actors portraying characters such as President Lincoln, General Lee, Mary Todd Lincoln, a surgeon and a preacher from the South. There was plenty of interaction. Students played a vintage form of baseball and learned how to keep a battle line straight.

SOAR Runners Complete Their Final Laps for the School Year
SOAR runners at Elementary North and Elementary South ran their final laps last week as parents and teachers cheered them on. Students made great progress over the spring as they built endurance and proved to themselves that they could "soar."

3-2-1 Blast Off!
The sixth grade science classes of Ms. Howell, Ms. Humboldt and Ms. Baker designed, tested and launched bottle rockets as part of an engineering design unit. The rockets use pressurized water for propulsion. Students were treated to some very impressive performances this year, and an enjoyable time was had by all.

Field Day is a Blast
Students had a great time playing outdoors last Friday for the annual Townline/School of Dual Language Field Day. Examples of teamwork and good sportsmanship were everywhere as the children played a wide assortment of relay games, tug of war and other fun games.

Pen Pals Meet in Person
Throughout the year, sixth grade students in the classrooms of Ms. Wright and Ms. Corush at Middle School South corresponded with third grade students at Aspen Elementary. Last week, the third grade students got a chance to meet their pen pals at Middle School South. The middle school students showed their pen pals around the school. This is an event that students had been looking forward to all year. The two schools have been offering this pen pal program every year for more than 10 years.
