June 7, 2019

Dear Neighbor,

Summer in the 48th Ward officially begins this evening when Midsommarfest in Andersonville kicks off. This annual festival on Clark Street from Foster to Catalpa is a tradition in our community and offers live music, street food, children's activities, and more. Please join me tomorrow at noon at Foster and Clark for the annual Maypole dance. For all the details on Midsommarfest, click here

Earlier this week my office hosted a public safety meeting with 20th District Commander Sean Loughran and 24th District Commander Michelle Rubino. Thank you to the more than 50 neighbors who came out to share their concerns and ideas about safety in the ward. If you're interested in getting more involved, please see below for a schedule of CAPS meetings. Click here to view the Safety Tips handout distributed at the meeting. If you're interested in getting a burglary assessment at your home, please contact Alan Oviedo at alan@48thward.org.

My office has opened our summer satellite office at 1100 W. Argyle. We have spent every morning this week on the corner of Argyle and Winthrop sharing resources with neighbors. We plan to continue an increased presence on Argyle throughout the summer and will be working with local service providers to help connect those in need with housing, employment, and other social service resources. If you would like to learn more about how you can support our efforts on Argyle, please contact Alan Oviedo at alan@48thward.org

I attended the decommissioning for Rickover Naval Academy this week. Rickover has been a strong community partner in our ward for 14 years. Rickover is moving to Portage Park into the former Luther North College Prep facility. This allows both Rickover and Senn to better serve their students and to grow their enrollments. Please join me in wishing Rickover a fond farewell and best of luck in their next chapter. Please also join me in congratulating the Class of 2019 graduating from both Rickover and Senn tomorrow.

Yesterday I chaired the first meeting of the Committee on Housing & Real Estate, where the committee confirmed the new Commissioner on Housing, Marisa Novara. Commissioner Novara has an extensive background in urban planning and served as Vice President of the Metropolitan Planning Council prior to assuming her new role. I look forward to working with Commissioner Novara to expand affordable housing throughout the City.

Before my first Housing Committee, I joined business leaders from Edgewater at the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce's State of Edgewater breakfast. State Representative Greg Harris, 40th Ward Alderman Andre Vasquez, and I spoke on a panel about how we can all work together to support our small businesses. Congratulations to the Chamber on a great event.

And lastly, congratulations to Chinese Mutual Aid Association on another successful Dim Sum & Then Sum 5K last weekend. This event raises funds to support CMAA's important work and celebrates the vibrant Asian culture on Argyle. Thank you to CMMA for all you do to support our community.

Enjoy your weekend.

Sincerely,

Harry Osterman
Alderman, 48th Ward

Please be aware that there may be traffic delays heading to and from Lake Shore Drive due to this work, and adjust your commute accordingly.
