The Week That Was: Rest in Power, Roky
Saying goodbye to a legend, some Icelandic soul and new music jamz.
- Monday, June 3: What were we listening to in May? Jim starts things off with music from Pittsburgh post-punkers The Gotobeds, L.A. indie rockers Bleached, and this cool Edgar Allen Poe thing. That Bleached song, right?
- Tuesday, June 4: Patrick picks out some Canadian cajun music and Afrikan fusion. Le Winston Band and Kongo Dia Ntotila, specifically. And they liked our Insta!
- Wednesday, June 5: Jim and Patrick say goodbye to legendary singer/guitarist/songwriter Roky Erickson. Rest in Power, Roky, your room on the 13th floor is ready.
- Thursday, June 6: Icelandic soul singer Júníus Meyvant has an amazing backstory and creates powerful music. We sat down with him at a hotel before his show in Washington, DC.
- Friday, June 7: Part Two of our chat with Júníus. In which we find out which American sport he knows a whole lot about, among other things.

Last, Not Least: New Releases June 7
That's today, peoples. Fresh wax, shiny discs and unplayed tape.
Stef Chura – Midnight (Saddle Creek) – Some say rock is dead. This Detroit rocker makes a strong statement otherwise on her second album (produced by Will Toledo of Car Seat Headrest).
Bob Dylan – The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1975 Live Recordings (Columbia) – Many consider this tour to be Dylan’s best stage effort, with sets that lasted four hours. A last flash of glory before his Born Again phase clouded the rest of the decade. This 14-disc box set contains music from five concerts, plus studio rehearsals and other bonus tracks.
Perry Farrell – Kind Heaven (BMG) – Whether it’s with Jane’s Addiction or Porno For Pyros or now as a solo artist, alt-rock pioneer Farrell always put out interesting music. For this album, he teams with legendary Bowie producer Tony Visconti, which seems like an ideal match, really.
Jonas Brothers – Happiness Begins (Republic) – This fifth album is dubbed a comeback. But did these fraternal dreamboats ever really leave our hearts?
Palehound – Black Friday (Polyvinyl) – Such languid indie rock in the past might have had a hard time finding an audience. But thanks to the interconnected world, thoughtful artists like Ellen Kempner can find their niche and life is a little better because of it.
Santana – Africa Speaks (Concord) – The fiery guitarist returns with an exploration of the roots of Afro-Latin music. The featured vocalist this time around is Buika, a Spanish flamenco singer who is considerably more authentic than Rob Thomas.
Silversun Pickups – Widow’s Weeds (New Machine) – For a band of the 2000s, Silversun Pickups have always sounded more like they came from the ’90s. And so they fittingly recruited Butch Vig to produce this, their fifth album. Well played.
