Robert Mangan,  Principal

Dear Parents, Caregivers & Friends of the College

SENIOR ASSESSMENT WEEK

Next week is an important week for our senior students being Senior Assessment Week.

All students are expected to be at school on Monday 10th through until Thursday 13th June as assessments will occur during timetabled classes.

On Friday 14th June, there is no school for Seniors except those taking Level 3 Physics or unless they were absent during the week and need to do a catch up assessment.  Students involved have been informed directly.

All boys have been notified of these arrangements and should know what the expectation is of them.

Traditionally, some boys under-prepare for these assessment tasks and exams and fail to gain maximum benefit from the assessment opportunities available.

Thorough preparation for the assessments will maximise their opportunities to succeed and set a sound platform on which to base their academic success this year.  They will be able to identify gaps or weaknesses in their knowledge and then work to ensure these deficiencies are rectified.

Parents need to be aware that as some of these exams carry internal NCEA Credits this may be the only assessment opportunity.

Your son needs to understand clearly the requirements and attend every class next week.  Those students who fail to meet this commitment will be required to make up the time.

Parents of Years 11, 12 and 13 students will be able to access reports online by 28th June.

Old Boys' News

Congratulations to Ryan Holt, the inaugural recipient of the University of Waikato 2Degrees Esports Scholarship worth $5,000.  Esports, or online video game tournaments, are quickly becoming a sport of choice among millennials, with approximately 380 million participants globally.  To meet the demand for the growing sport, the University of Waikato has opened the on-campus OMEN Esports Arena.  Ryan said "the mental challenge and teamwork are the best parts of sports.  Esports has allowed me to combine my passion for video games with my love of a challenge, and to surround myself with other likeminded people".  Outside of gaming Ryan ensures a healthy life balance by volunteering at the Waipuna Charity Shop, playing lawn bowls and taking regular walks outside without any devices.  Ryan is aiming to work in game design one day and hopes his Bachelor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences will help him get there.

Future Pathways

STP

Mr Hind and Mrs Stanley’s class made its penultimate delivery of furniture to the Barista Port Cafe last Friday; the banquet table. Both classes are now preparing to find Gateway placements for next term.

They are now working on the set for the Production, 'Oliver'. There has been a conscious effort to make this as sustainable as possible, pallets have been used as the main building material.

Pasifika

A group of Pasifika boys attended the Waiariki BOP Pasifika Speech competition. Dominic Tupou was one of the MC’s and Claude Hammond entered the Tongan section of the competition.

There was a Pasifika Famili Performance night last Thursday.  The Nesian performance group (Tauranga Boys' and Tauranga Girls' Colleges) and the Super 8 Performance Group, both performed their competition pieces for family and friends.  Following this there was a shared, informal meal.

Achievement Support

Employ NZ will be coming in to speak to a group of Year 11 and Year 12 students on Friday 7th June. Employ NZ offers a range of different programs suitable for students to continue their educational pathway. There have been significant changes in this sector and they have extended the range of courses they have available. Any student wishing to find out additional information can use the following link:

Careers

A group of Senior students went with Mr Meys and Mr Sperling last Friday to the Toi Ohomai open day.

Mr Meys took a group of Yr 12-13 students to Grace Hospital last week for a seminar based around careers in Health. This was followed by a presentation to over sixty boys by ‘Logan and Jesse’s Trade Up Tour’, on Tuesday here at school. Their focus was to encourage school leavers to consider a career in the trades. Over 36 boys have been placed in the Gateway programme. There are plenty of opportunities available for Senior boys to gain real life work placements. All that is required is to fill in an application form in Rm 15 and Mr Sperling will make it happen.

Out and About ...

Trent Duggan (Y13) is completing a 8 day Gateway placement with Page and Macrae Engineering and attends every Tuesday. He will spend time in 3 different departments. At this stage he is looking at the trades: Diesel Mechanic and Heavy Fabrication Engineering. Pix (Apprentice Coordinator) has advised Trent that he will need to complete the Pre-trade course at Toi Ohomai later this year and work with Page and Macrae gaining more work experience towards a possible apprenticeship after the course is completed.

Connor McGreevy (Y11) Gateway placement has been working on a farm during his holidays. Connor is looking at a Dairy Farming career once he leaves. As part of the Gateway programme Mr Sperling has arranged a National Fieldays visit for 11 students from Mr Mossop's L1 Agricultural class. Connor will be part of that group which has a tour of the Career and Education Hub on the site looking at the various career possibilities. He will also be completing L2 Dairy Farming through the Primary Industry Organisation via correspondence. 2019 Fieldays Career and Education Hub
