Greetings from the Shoreline Hi Cap Parent Association (SHCPA)!

Thank you to the community members who participated in our annual survey!  Results will be shared after we have compiled and reviewed the data.

As we close out this school year, we would also like to extend our appreciation to the parent volunteers, Shoreline PTA Council, Shoreline Special Needs PTSA, teachers and administrators who have supported our organization.  We are also grateful for the steadfast efforts of the Northwest Gifted Child Association with its continued advocacy of gifted education and informative resources for the parent community.

Save The DateMonday, September 30, 2019, at Meridian Park Elementary will be the first of our evening community meetings!  We'll include social time with parents and collaborative time with a special guest. Stay tuned for more details!

Have a wonderful summer.

  • Provides input and feedback to SHCPA regarding the experiences of Hi Cap students and families relative to that school
  • Assists with the advertisement of events and with the promotion of initiatives to support Hi Cap students, families and educators
  • Communicates Hi Cap legislative news to his/her school PTA board (as necessary)

BOOK RECOMMENDATION
From Amazon: Today millions of kids are stuck in a world that doesn't respect, support, or embrace who they really are—these are what Deborah Reber is calling the “differently wired” kids, the one in five children with ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger’s, giftedness, anxiety, sensory processing disorder, and other neurodifferences. Their challenges are many. But for the parents who love them, the challenges are just as hard—struggling to find the right school, the right therapist, the right parenting group, etc. while feeling isolated and harboring endless internal doubts about what’s normal, what’s not, and how to handle it all.
But now there’s hope. Written by Deborah Reber, a bestselling author and mother in the midst of an eye-opening journey with her son who is twice exceptional (he has ADHD, Asperger’s, and is highly gifted), Differently Wired is a how-to, a manifesto, a book of wise advice, and the best kind of "been-there, done-that" companion.
DISTRICT NEWS
SUMMER MATH SUPPORT:  For students new to the Highly Capable math program this fall, the district now offers a Summer Math Boosters website, which may help your student learn key topics from that "skipped year" of math content.

SUMMER HI CAP TESTING FOR "NEW TO SHORELINE" STUDENTS:  For students who are new to Shoreline (those who enrolled after January 1, 2019) and were not previously screened or tested during the 2018-19 school year, the deadline to register for summer assessments is Thursday, June 27, at 4 p.m.  The testing date will be July 30.  Please refer to the district website for additional details.

Jacob Javits Gifted & Talented Students Education Act

(From the National Association for Gifted Children - NAGC): The Jacob Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Act (Javits) was first passed by Congress in 1988 as part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and was most recently reauthorized through the Every Student Succeeds Act to support the development of talent in U.S. schools.  The Javits Act, which is the only federal program dedicated specifically to gifted and talented students, does not fund local gifted education programs.

Funding for Javits Program - Federal Fiscal Year 2019 (October 1, 2018–September 30, 2019)

The Administration proposed cutting Javits for fiscal year 2019 (FY19). With the support of advocates, we (the NAGC) were able to convince Congress to fund Javits.

Congress voted to provide the Javits program $12 million for FY19, the same amount of funding received in 2018.

In calendar year 2017, the U.S. Department of Education awarded funding for thirteen 2017 and one 2018 (one project funded down the 2017 slate) Javits projects.

In March 2019, the Administration proposed cutting Javits for federal fiscal year 2020 (FY20).

NAGC released a statement opposing these cuts

Advocates should stay engaged with the Legislative Action Network for the latest updates.
