DBS NEWSLETTER

7th June 2019

From Mark McVeigh, Principal

Dear DBS Parents,

You could almost hear the collective sigh of relief today, as our Year 5 to 8 students finished their internal exams. There has been an impressively focused atmosphere throughout the examination sessions, and the students deserve praise for the way that they have approached their preparations. Mrs Skinner spoke to the Pre-Prep today on the theme ‘Make It Happen’, and she highlighted the endeavour of a friend of hers who had successfully raised funds to build a school in a town in Uganda, bringing hope and opportunity to the children there.

We have learnt about individual student successes this week, including the International Singapore Maths Competition, where Imp, Aun, Punpun, Mark, Ik, Q, and Nacho performed very well indeed. Kinjay won her age category at the Department of Physical Education Swimming Competition, and Kaka attended the 'Mondial Pupilles de Plomelin' International Football Tournament in France.

Thank you to those of you who attended the Y2 Transition Meeting with Mrs Skinner, and the Y3-8 parents’ seminar on the Beacon and Scholarship Programme, with Mr Lyng, Ms Babb and Ms Lovatt. The latter seminar launched enrichment programmes starting in the new academic year for students who are highly able or greatly engaged in their academic studies.

Finally, as the 75th anniversary of D-day was a huge event in Europe this week, it is important to reflect on the sacrifices of the allied soldiers, who changed the course of world history by stopping the spread of Nazism – a reminder to us all that extremism of any kind must be confronted before it takes root.

Lisa joins me in sending you our very best wishes,

Mark McVeigh
Principal
Denla British School, Bangkok

The children in the EY1 Jellyfish Class have been working with a variety of natural materials, in preparation for the DBS Art Exhibition. This week we completed our Rock Monsters. They are so bright and colourful - come and see them when they are on display!

Thank you to those parents who were able to join us for the EY swimming showcases this week. The children thoroughly enjoyed exhibiting their water skills to their Mums and Dads; we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! Next week the showcases continue with both the EY1 Seahorse and EY1 Starfish Class.

Let’s celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival together! This week, Y1 Turtle class have made sticky rice dumpling 'Zongzi'. A piece of bamboo leaf, some sticky rice and red dates are all the ingredients that we need to wrap it up!

The Coffee Morning Transition Meetings have continued over the past few weeks with parents of children in Y1 and Y2 finding out about what happens to their child in the next academic year.

Mrs Skinner and Mrs Fineman shared with parents the things that remain the same, but also the things that will change for next year. This included both routine and expectations, but also academically.

Please watch the videos below for further information. If you missed these important meetings, please log on to the parent portal, where you will find the slides in both English and Thai. Thank you.

Well done to Y5-8 for completing the End of Year Exams! We have been very impressed with their focus and maturity throughout the week and they still have smiles on their faces!
