Dear <<First Name>>,

Last June we had the great privilege of a private tour of Pieropan in the Veneto area of Northern Italy, a stones throw from the beautiful old city of Verona and I remain fascinated by the style of these wonderful wines.

Monica Larner (Wine Advocate) has just returned from Veneto and posted glowing reports for the Pieropan range (only the whites in her interim report), a testament to the quality of the wines that are often overlooked.

With summer now upon us this is an excellent opportunity to grab a case of the latest releases and some limited magnums for parties, all at the best prices in the UK.

".. the true standouts are the three Soave Classico wines. No one comes close to giving a more graceful and delicate voice to the workhorse Garganega grape."
Pieropan has been making wine since 1880 when Leonildo Pieropan started the family business and now 4 generations later, it is still true to many of those traditions and inspirations with Andrea, one of 2 brothers currently at the helm.

In the shadow of the medieval Castello di Soave, the original winery is still located in the middle of this historic village where until this year they still produced all the white wines, although plans are well underway for new winery just outside the historic walls. The red wines are made at Villa Cipolla, a 15th century historic mansion in the heart of Valpolicella.
It was fascinating to see the old traditional methods like the bamboo cane mats still used today for 'air drying' the indigenous Garganega grapes in the top of the tower, used for Amarone and the sweet Recioto Le Colombare wines.
The old cellars were a treasure trove of farming tools and implements of the past and bottles of wine from the 1920's
Not all wines are made the same!

Already one of my favourite white wines from Soave, it was great to try the Classico's side by side and get a sense of the subtleties with the different blends, soils and fermentation methods.
Calvarino is made in concrete Vats with a minerality finish and La Rocca is made in oak barrels with more complex white fruits, fascinating!

The Ruberpan is delightfully fresh, well balanced and glides down with a lovely sweet cherry finish.

The biggest surprise was the Amarone and for those that believe that Amarone is a big, chunky and alcoholic wine, think again! .. Utterly gorgeous and refinded.
A succession of gentle hills watching over the majestic contour of the Monte Amiata. It’s precisely from one of these soft and sensual hills that the story of Fattoria Le Pupille begins and leads it to how it is seen today: a heterogenous reality. In the course of the years, the originating core of the winery effectively enriched itself of new grape particles, reaching today 75 hectares of vineyards, distributed like many mosaic pieces between many stunning areas of Maremma. Another 20 hectares are destined to the olives, and then cereals and cork oaks alternate with pastures reaching up to 420 hectares of overall property.
In 1982 the first ‘official’ label is released, a Morellino Riserva 1978. In 1987 it is the time of Saffredi, the wine that has made Maremma known for its excellence, not only in Tuscany, but much further away from its borders. In 1996, the purchase of the Poggio Valente vineyard gives an even more important turn to the winery.

2016 Soave Classico Calvarino (DOC)

70% Garganega, 30% Trebbiano

The Calvarino vineyard is in the heart of the Soave Classico zone and represents the core of the ancient family estate, bought at the beginning of 1900. The soil here dates back to the tertiary era and is rich in clay and tufaceous basalt which give the wine an attractive savoury, mineral quality.
The name ‘Calvarino’ derives from ‘Little Calvary’ reflecting how difficult the soil is to work and the tortuous path which winds from top to bottom.
The label was first released in 1971 and is symbolic of the most traditional, most characteristic wine from the Soave
area.

"This wine celebrates its 45th anniversary (1971-2016) with this vintage. The 2016 Soave Classico Calvarino (a blend of 70% Garganega and 30% Trebbiano di Soave) is a beautifully bountiful and exuberant wine that bursts forward with stone and exotic fruit, with crushed oyster shell at the back. The wine delivers abundant complexity and depth, and this puts it into a category of its own as far as Italian white wines are concerned."

2016 Soave Classico La Rocca (DOC)

100% Garganega

The vineyard ‘La Rocca’ is situated on the Monte Rocchetta hill, just below the mediaeval castle built by the Scaligeri family in the town of Soave. The microclimate in this vineyard produces wines with a unique perfume and distinctive taste.
The grapes are picked when very ripe, often as late as the end of October, giving tremendous complexity and aromatic qualities to the wine, making it a wine of great breeding.
The wine was first made under this label in 1978.

"A pure expression of Garganega (aged in large oak casks for 15 months), the 2016 Soave Classico la Rocca is a mid-weight white wine with deep intensity and a pleasantly creamy texture. This impressive wine has the inner structure and fiber to pair with tempura or chicken curry. "

2016 Ruberpan Valpolicella Superiore

60% Corvina Veronesse, 30% Rondinella, 5% Corvinone & Crotina + 5% Old Vine Valpolicella

Launched in 2003 from grapes grown on vineyards in Cellored'Illasi, on the slopes of Mount Garzon 500m aboce sea leevl. The new winery is the famous Villa Cipolla Pieropan in Tregnago Verona.
The name Ruberpan comes from the Latin, 'Ruber' which means Ruby and Pan from the Pieropan family name.
This red is both elegant and structured.
Rich and concentrated on the nose, it has a good depth on the palate, with flavours of red berry fruit, black cherries and blackberries balancing fresh vivacious fruit with silky tannins.

2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Garzon

60% Corvina, 35% Corvinone, Rondinella, Crotina + 5% Old Vine Valpolicella

Amarone, classic wine from the Valpolicella region, is a new, exciting venture for the Pieropan family.  It comes from the desire to test our skills with the Valpolicella zone, which though a neighbour of Soave, is very different and completely unique.  It stems also from the desire to make a top red wine, both rich and structured, but also elegant and fine in line with the whole Pieropan range.

for those who love a good score ... from the 2013 Vintage
"Vivid red. Intensely perfumed nose of red cherry, rose, violet, cinnamon, bay leaf and quinine. Then dense and juicy, with an almost seamless quality to the suave red cherry and red berry flavors. Picks up an enticing spicy note on the long, lively and very clean finish. Remarkably precise Amarone of non pareil-purity. My early candidate for one of the top three Amarones of the vintage."  - 94+ pts
