Royal Holloway's Welcome Week begins 23 September

Welcome to this special edition of Community Matters. We want to take this opportunity to share some information with you about activities which may affect residents during this year’s Welcome Week, when our students join us ahead of the new term.

A message from the Principal

As the university prepares for the start of a new term and new academic year, we are excited to welcome a new cohort of students to our university, and to the local community. As part of the local community, we are keen that our students settle in to their halls and homes safely and considerately, and become good neighbours.

Our students bring many positives to the local area, from award-winning volunteering initiatives and creative community events, to investment from businesses and enterprises. However, we are aware that a very small number of students can take time to adjust to their new living arrangements and this can cause concern.

Therefore, we are taking a number of steps before the start of term to ensure that measures and information is in place to communicate to students the importance of being considerate neighbours, and our expectations of them. We are taking this opportunity to share that information with you, along with some important local updates relating to the start of term.

I’d like to thank you for your continued support of the university. I am always delighted to hear the many positive comments that come from you, whether from those who benefit from student projects, who attend our events on campus, or who simply enjoy spending time in our beautiful surroundings.

I hope the strength of our relationship continues to grow throughout the academic year, as we look forward to welcoming students to Runnymede.

Temporary diversions affecting Harvest Road on weekend

of 21 to 22 September 2019

From 8am to 6pm on Saturday, 21 and Sunday, 22 September 2019, students will be welcomed to their halls of residence across Royal Holloway’s campus.

To ease the flow of traffic from the A30, and discourage visitors from accessing George Eliot Hall from the surrounding residential roads, the university has worked with Surrey County Council to manage a temporary diversion on the lower part of Harvest Road.

The portion of Harvest Road directly between the two blocks of George Eliot will be closed to incoming traffic on both days from 8am until 6pm. Access to the upper part of Harvest Road will be via South Road.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Any questions or concerns should be directed to securityrhul@royalholloway.ac.uk

Hall Life Campaign

This year the Student Wellbeing Community team launched a new campaign that focused on students leaving halls and going into the private rented sector and which ran ahead of the new academic year. The Halls to Home campaign aimed to inform students about what it means to live in the local community. The team distributed leaflets and attended hall events to help promote the message. The campaign focused on what Royal Holloway expects of its students when they are living in the community. This includes how they should behave and areas they need to give consideration to such as keeping noise to a minimum, taking out the bins, and putting them back. The team also encouraged students to introduce themselves to their new neighbours. The aim was to encourage students to start to consider these things before they move into the community.

As we move into the new term, the next step in the campaign will include Royal Holloway’s community support advisors visiting a number of student houses in Egham and Englefield Green to ensure they are settling into the community and to remind them of what it is to be a good neighbour. Each house will receive a ‘Be a Good Neighbour Guide’ that includes introduction postcards that the students can use to introduce themselves to their neighbours.

Royal Holloway is committed to ensuring students are well integrated into their local communities. However, if any issues do arise please contact community@royalholloway.ac.uk
or call: 01784 276612 or 01784 443394.

Freshers' Ball will be held on Saturday 28 September

Dr Tom Flynn, Chief Executive Officer of Royal Holloway Students’ Union, would like to take this opportunity to let you know about the Freshers' Ball:

“Royal Holloway’s academic year commences on Monday, 23 September, and we will be welcoming new arrivals with our Freshers' Ball on Saturday, 28 September.

“This year’s event, which will feature outdoor music performances, has been relocated to the South Quad of Founder’s Building, further away from the A30, to help reduce risk of disturbance. The event will commence at 8pm with the main stage closing at 2am, and we will be providing free minibus transport for all students to get home safely.

“The Students’ Union is liaising with Runnymede Borough Council, and together we will endeavour to ensure any noise disturbance is kept to a minimum. We will be conducting regular sound monitoring visits throughout the local area over the course of the night, liaising with the environmental health team to minimise the impact on the local community.

“Minimising noise after the event is a key focus for us. We will be running a number of awareness campaigns amongst the students aiming to combat the issue. If you experience problems on the night, please contact Royal Holloway campus security on 01784 443063.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents’ associations of both Egham and Englefield Green for their continued support and understanding, and apologise if this annual event impacts your evening.”
Community drop-in session on 15 October

Royal Holloway holds termly drop-in sessions for local residents on its campus. The sessions provide an opportunity for individual members of the local community to come in and discuss topics of concern to them with a representative from the university.

Please join us for the next community drop-in session on Tuesday, 15 October from 5pm to 6pm in the Emily Wilding Davison Building event space on the ground floor.
