May 2019 Digest

Reaching the Unreached with Health Services & Information
We are impacting lives globally and locally because #CSICares.
Dear CSI Friends, Partners, and Donors:

Greetings or as they say in Nepal, Namaste! In CSI's combined Q1 newsletter and April Digest, I mentioned attending 2019 World Bank/IMF Spring Meetings. I had the pleasure of connecting with old and new friends, who are truly committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 and ensure sustainability of major investments.

CSI is a respected global partner and has a trusted and strong presence at the grassroots level in Tanzania, Uganda, and Somalia. Particularly addressing gaps in reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health; government, religious, and local leaders count on CSI because of the success rates. At the 2019 Spring Meetings, I shared CSI's impact stories contributing to shaping some of the conversations and discussions. As we approach 2030, it's even more critical to increase investments in bi- and multi-directional evidence-based interventions to maximize outreach and impact.

Through partnerships and collaborations at all levels of the health and development landscape, CSI leadership and in-country teams are well positioned especially at the grassroots level to implement quality culturally-sensitive evidence-based programs, reduce preventable deaths and disabilities, and shape health policies to benefit everyone. #CSIImpactingLives

Sincerely,
Bhim Bahadur BK, CEO

Families and Communities Need Midwives: Updates from Tanzania
When former president of Tanzania, Dr. Jakaya M. Kikwete called for a stakeholders' meeting to strategize and leverage commitment to increase access and improve quality of midwifery care in the country, CSI was part of this important meeting. Dr. Kikwete's call paved meaningful dialogue and action for collaboration for collective impact. No one organization or donor can reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths and disabilities, it requires a collective approach and prioritizing people's health and well-being. We're proud of CSI Tanzania's midwifery professional development program led by Stella M. Mpanda that continues to improve midwifery skills and competency.

#WhatWomenWant: Rights to Health and to Thrive
When the White Ribbon Alliance (WRA) for Safe Motherhood launched the #WhatWomenWant campaign, it resulted in a global wave of responses with common themes such as women want quality and respectful care; women want skilled midwives at time of delivery; women want ambulatory services to transport pregnant women to health facilities, and more. CSI Tanzania a proud partner of WRA Tanzania and participates in creating safe spaces for women and girls in Dar es Salaam to vocalize their needs.
Indirect Cost of Preventable Maternal Deaths: Updates from Uganda
Meet CSI's Grant Writer & Donor Specialist
Childbirth Survival Internationl (CSI) values excellence, diversity, and unique talent. In the beginning of Quarter II, we welcomed Kerry Nuckles to the CSI USA Team as our Grant Writer & Donor Specialist. Kerry joins the CSI core team with a lot of enthusiasm and brings a wealth of international health experience in maternal and child health. Kerry currently works as the Deputy Health Officer for Flathead County in Montana and is excited to volunteer with CSI to advance efforts to save lives of mothers and babies in marginalized communities. Kerry says, "I am happy to help support maternal and child health efforts both in USA and sub-Saharan Africa" where CSI is largely present. We're excited to welcome Kerry to our dynamic team.

"Access to quality basic healthcare services is a universal human right; it is a moral obligation to reach the unreached with health services, resources, and information". ~ Mpanda & Suedi, April 2013.
