Happy June Everyone!
 

Tulips have come in full force and almost gone, and while it hasn't felt much like summer yet it's almost here. 

That means that there's all kinds of ways to enjoy the outdoors in this fabulous city.  The City of Ottawa puts out a lot of information on summer recreation in the city geared towards older adults - check out the articles below. 

For foodies - this season also brings back the farmers markets and no more to we have to delve into the busy Byward Market to partake as there are many good market locations all around the city.  You'll find a great list of available markets should you want some variety at https://ottawastart.com/a-big-list-of-ottawa-farmers-markets/

Information and Services for Adults 50+

The City of Ottawa has a wide variety of information available for seniors on their website. (And for many other groups of residents as well.) 

Support categories include caregiver support, financial assistance, health & support services, help around the home, housing, getting around the city and safety.

Recreation and leisure for older adults (including the booklet in the next article), a PDF guide to Services and Programs.  You can sign up for the "older adult email distribution list", and get information about the Ottawa Public Library, including everything from classes on computer basics to a knitting club.

The city is also interested in having people assist with planning everything from outdoor spaces to housing to the City's Older Adult Plan.  ...visit the website...

This 38 page booklet prepared by The City of Ottawa is available at various locations including the public libraries.  It's also available as a PDF download so that you can scan it and only print the parts that you find interesting.

You'll find information about performing arts, visual arts, fitness, sports, general interst, drop-in activities plus seniors centres, fitness memberships and more.

Good For Your Gut & Memory - Eat This Herb

It’s been a culinary staple the world over for a long time - we’re talking Ancient Egypt long.

Long also is the list of health benefits it’s said to have — we’re talking everything from alleviating athlete’s foot to reducing the risk of stomach cancer.

And now, you can add memory and gut health to that list.

It’s garlic.

And researchers at the University of Louisville say that eating the pungent herb helps counteract age-related changes in gut bacteria associated with memory problems.  ...read more...


 

Seniors’ housing segment across Canada in flux

Significant regional variances in senior housing activity were apparent over the past year, according to recent market analysis by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

In its latest regional reports for the asset class, the Crown corporation said that the vacancy rate for seniors’ residences went up over the past year in British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Saskatchewan.

The trend went in the opposite direction in other provinces, decreasing in Ontario, Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland.   ...read more...

Ottawa Water Garden Tour - This 11th annual tour will be featuring 10 beautiful water gardens of various designs and sizes around the greater Ottawa area during the day, with another site being showcased at night.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert The stage production of The heartwarming, dazzling adventures of Tick, Bernadette and Adam, a glamorous Sydney-based performing trio who agree to develop a show together and take it to the middle of the Australian outback aboard a battered old bus they name “Priscilla”. The three embark on unknown roads and end up finding everything they need.
