SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT

Educators Head to Baltimore for Summer Learning

Next month, 3,000 K-12 teachers, principals and state and district educational leaders will convene in Baltimore for SREB’s annual College- and Career-Readiness Standards Networking Conference and Making Schools Work Conference. Attendees will share strategies and take home tools they can use to transform teaching and learning in their schools and districts.
 
Speakers for the Networking and Making Schools Work conferences include nationally known individuals like Freeman Hrabowski III, STEM educator and president of the University of Maryland - Baltimore County, Sonja Brookins Santelises, CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools and Robert Q. Berry III, president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
 
Online registration is open until June 28. On-site registration will be available during both conferences.

Call for Proposals: Share With Go Alliance

SREB Go Alliance is seeking proposals for presentations, at its fall 2019 meeting, on recent research findings or promising practices on: 

  • College access outreach campaigns
  • Postsecondary success programs
  • Student support programs 
  • Better understanding and supporting target audiences
  • Social psychology or behavioral economics in college access outreach or support 
  • Successful collective impact partnerships

State Spotlights

Rural Georgia Schools Partner to Improve

In Georgia, three rural school districts are coming together to find local solutions to improve student achievement. Together, Burke County, Emanuel County and Jefferson County schools serve more than 11,000 students, the majority of whom are students of color (66%) and qualify for free and reduced lunch (96%). SREB and the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement are partnering to support this new networked improvement community with technical assistance, coaching and more.

Two Florida Colleges Win the 2019 Aspen Community College Prize

These two colleges shared a $1 million prize in the nation’s signature recognition of community colleges. 

Miami Dade College provides a clear path to economic and social mobility for its students, the vast majority of whom come from low-income households and are the first in their families to attend college.

Indian River State College has among the strongest transfer outcomes in the nation, despite a semirural location more than 60 miles from a four-year university. More than half of all IRSC students transfer into a bachelor’s program, and more than half of those earn their degrees.
