Planning the Perfect Pool House

With the hottest month of the summer season upon us, it is only natural to seek out those pursuits that either have you enjoying the Bay, or those that take you poolside. If you are like any homeowner with a pool, you will require a place to stash all your equipment and supplies. However, some homeowners see the value in creating a complete cool pool entertaining zone and that means—a pool house!

If you are going to invest in a pool house, the first thing you will need to decide is how you need the pool house to function for your family. It is wise to think through your requirements for this space carefully, so it will be functional for as long as you own your home.

Once you have done that you will need to assess your design desires. What type of space do you want it to be, and how big? Do you wish the pool house to mimic your home as far as style and look? Perhaps, you’d prefer a transportive space that takes you away or reminds you of an island holiday, or your favorite place at the beach? Do you need it to be just for summer living—or would you like it to have all-year-round utility? How will situate the pool house on your existing space? Once you have made those decisions, you can then assign a budget to your project. All these steps, of course, should be discussed with your builder for feasibility aspects and advice.

That is exactly what a Queenstown homeowner did to create their lovely and practical custom pool house with the help of Lundberg Builders and their architectural designer, Bob Moreland. After going through the planning process above they decided on a four-season, 500-square-foot Cape Cod style. Keeping in mind that the homeowners opted to have their pool house mimic their residence, the exterior mixes a stone front facade and vinyl siding to match the original home. Note, the homeowners exploited their groupings of mature trees when situating the house to soften the look of it against all the added hardscape.

Since the homeowner wanted four-season functionality, the interior provides the look of relaxed living with its cozy wood-burning fireplace and stone tile chimney facade, a limed-oak ceiling, and porcelain ceramic tile flooring for durability. A LaCantina folding glass door system, and large, double-hung windows were chosen to provide tons of natural light. Carole Lindenberg, ASID, of Potomac Designs in Bethesda, was brought in to add creature comforts and did so by using a calm, neutral palate for the furnishings and decorative elements, and a rich, warm sea-green interior paint.
Accents and detail work that lend depth to the design can be found throughout and around the structure. Probably the most wanted element of any pool house is a convenient and comfortable shower area. This pool house plan provided ample space for a large, rustic cedar shower unit sprinkled with details from its door latches to its wrought iron anchor-shaped towel hooks.
And while some homeowners may be tempted to think their project is complete at this point, this Queenstown family considered their mission accomplished once the accompanying patio was outfitted with a lava rock fire pit and swivel chairs, and their hardscape was balanced with a landscaping package provided by F.A. Hobson of Queenstown.
