Global | Climate and health takes center stage at World Health Assembly

The 72nd World Health Assembly that took place 20-28 May in Geneva, Switzerland, was a monumental one for climate and health and climate-smart health care. Read about our highlights, including:

  • The World Health Assembly approved a first ever global strategy on health, environment and climate change.
  • Dr. Tedros Adhonam, Director General of the WHO, spoke on the imperative of health care to adopt climate-smart strategies.
  • Health Care Without Harm’s Josh Karliner spoke on a high-level technical briefing on green, sustainable and climate resilient health care facilities.
  • The WHO and the Global Climate and Health Alliance launched a WHO Civil Society Working Group to Advance Action on Climate Change and Health, of which Health Care Without Harm is proud to be a member.

India | Health system response to Kerala floods of August 2018


The Kerala floods of 2018 offered a unique opportunity to appraise the challenges within the health sector and to redesign the health sector to be an anchor for communities during future extreme climatic events. Healthy Energy Initiative India and Doctors for You, in collaboration with Climate Action Network South Asia and Community Environmental Monitoring, conducted a preliminary assessment of the health system response to the 2018 Kerala floods to consolidate the experiences of health care systems in the state. Global Green and Healthy Hospitals 2018 Annual Report

Health Care Without Harm has released the 2018 Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Annual Report.  The beginning of 2018 saw GGHH celebrating its biggest milestone in the history of the network: 1,000 institutional members. This accomplishment launched a year highlighted by expansion, evolution and exciting ambitions that are redefining what truly sustainable, climate-smart health care can be. Read more.

US | Through floods and fires, hospital heroes show up for neighbors


Every year Health Care Without Harm honors an individual with the Environmental Health Hero award presented at our annual U.S. CleanMed conference. This year, we are recognizing the entire staffs at three California hospitals who went above and beyond to care for their communities during extreme weather events, from wildfires to heat waves. US | Educating lawmakers on climate change, air pollution, and health


In March, representatives from the Massachusetts Health Care Climate Alliance and Health Care Without Harm met with state legislators to discuss how mitigating and adapting to climate change can protect public health and contain health care costs. Health Care Without Harm shared information about a bill that will require any new or revised policy or regulation that impacts polluting emissions to take health impacts and health costs into consideration. Europe | Humanitarian aid for a healthy climate


Red Cross and Red Crescent representatives and the global climate and health community came together in April for the World Conference on Health and Climate Change to prepare for health and humanitarian challenges exacerbated by the climate crisis. During the conference in Cannes, Health Care Without Harm called upon humanitarian leaders to empower a movement of healthcare professionals, public health experts, and organizations to convince national leaders to double the global commitment to the Paris Agreement. Global | Hospitals find cool ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from hospital cooling make a significant contribution to climate change, and absent efforts to improve efficiency and/or decarbonize the power grid, hospital cooling’s climate impact could triple by 2040. Health Care Without Harm has initiated a project working with hospitals in three countries—Argentina, the Philippines, and China—to conduct energy audits and adopt energy efficient cooling systems and controls, all while saving money on energy bills.
