Research Bulletin - May 2019 (Issue 39)

Making it easier to carry out research across the UK is the vision of the UK Four Nations NHS/HSC Compatibility Programme and implementation of the UK Local Information Pack on 5 June is part of a package of collaborative work to make the researcher experience of study set up the same across the UK. Keep informed of project updates via the website or upcoming webinars

Supporting this collaborative approach is critical in delivering groundbreaking research to improve patient treatment and care across Scotland, the UK and internationally. Just this month, the RESTART trial, led by University of Edinburgh across 124 UK sites showed patients who have had a stroke caused by bleeding in the brain can safely take aspirin to cut their risk of future strokes and heart problems. Funded by the British Heart Foundation, findings were published in The Lancet, and presented at the European Stroke Organisation's (ESO) Conference in Milan – an excellent showcase of Scotland’s research expertise. Further recognition of Scottish-led research was also received at the Royal College of Physicians' (RCP) Excellence in Patient Care Awards as NRS Hepatology research lead Professor John Dillon collected the Innovation Award for work on the Intelligent Liver Function Test (iLFT), an automated system that improves diagnosis of liver disease and quality of care whilst remaining cost-effective. It is a small snapshot of Scotland’s research capabilities but important in strengthening Scotland’s position on the international stage.

Also this month, Opportunity North East (ONE) and the Scottish Government announced funding in projects which will use machine learning to develop an AI solution for radiological diagnosis of limb fractures; Irina McLean, Project Manager in NRS-CMT, discusses her work on research governance in social care in a podcast with IRISS; Join Dementia Research have released a short video urging healthcare professionals to encourage patients to become involved in dementia research; NRS Pain are looking for trainee and nurse members to join their Steering Committee; and much more.

Enjoy reading and as always your ideas, feedback and contributions are welcome.
