June's here!

Summertime starts later this month, but temps are already scorching - stay cool and keep your reusable water bottles handy. (More thoughts on the heat & our food system below in our Food for Thought segment.)

In our June newsletter: RSVP for our Summer Gathering, Wendell adopts the Food Plan, CAFN adds a Circle, Wake Food Security VISTA jobs open, NC Veterans & Farming meetup (see event list), & much more!

CAFN Summer Gathering

Join us on Thursday, June 20th from 9 to 11 am at the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC for our CAFN Summer Gathering, where we’ll go over important CAFN info and strengthen connections!

We’ll have a light breakfast beginning at 8:30 am and time for networking before & during the event. More details on our RSVP.

CAFN VISTA Position Open!

As our current AmeriCorps VISTA member’s year-long service term comes to an end this August, we’re starting the search for our new Development & Strategy Associate!

Many other positions in the Wake Food Security AmeriCorps VISTA Cohort are open for the August 2019 - August 2020 term. See our jobs section below for all five open positions.

Wendell Adopts Food Security Plan & Convenes Stakeholders

Following Wendell’s adoption of CAFN’s Food Security Plan for Wake County, a Food Security Summit was hosted in Wendell with our own Sydney Klein on May 1st.

At this first meeting, local programs were able to network and share their work in Wendell, and participants began looking at how to set some long-term, strategic food security goals for the town.

We're excited to see where Wendell takes the Food Security Plan!

CAFN Votes to Add Economic Development Circle

CAFN just approved a new addition to our food council’s Circles - a new Economic Development Circle is in the works!

Following our recent Interest Meeting where we assessed capacity and brainstormed ideas, the new Circle will have one more preliminary meeting to set important details and build out the Circle’s priorities. Expect regular Circle meetings soon!

Comprehensive Food Security Plan for Wake County

See our quick overview for all the Plan updates we have so far. Add a comment on the document if you have new information!

It’s hot out.

And if you feel like it's been getting hotter every year, you'd be right - the trend has been consistent since the early 2000s. Climate change is here; it is not off in a distant future. But what does this have to do with the food system?

The food system is a problematic yet promising two-sided coin when it comes to climate change and its effects. It’s local, yet global. It's a huge driver of climate change and inequity, yet it’s exactly where some of the most amazing changes can take place, from the ground up (and back again) to heal our planet, and us.

Solutions will require teamwork, innovation and grit, but luckily, that's exactly what food councils bring people together to do. If you haven’t gotten the chance to make it to one of our meetings, we welcome you to join us and see what local food systems change looks like in practice!
