Good morning, <<First Name>>

An Empowered Alumna

Today she is a happy and confident woman. And why not?  Janet, who is 22 years old is a proud co-owner of a growing dressmaking and clothing business. Thanks to you for empowering Janet to reach this feat at such a young age.  As a young girl, however, her journey was riddled with difficulties, but she never gave up. Janet’s dad passed away when she was only 5 years old.  Through many hardships, her mom did her best to raise Janet and her three sisters.  She shares some of the struggles they went through:

"Life was too difficult and my mother was a beggar and she had no hope … we were isolated by the community and nobody minded about us. I wished one day I could buy sugar for my mum to make tea which she likes too much......but I thank God that today I do”.

In 2007 Janet and her young sister were introduced to Tumaini by their home church pastor.  It was that intervention that paved a way for Janet’s bright future. She was sponsored through completion of elementary school, high school and vocational college. In college she pursued a certificate in dressmaking.  Upon graduating from college, Tumaini, through its alumni scholarship fund bought Janet her first sewing machine and this was the hand-up that she critically needed.  Today, Janet runs a thriving business which deals in dressmaking and selling of clothes. Janet is grateful that she can use her skills to earn a living and help her family.  During peak season, she is even able to hire temporary help and thus offer hope to others in need. Janet is grateful to her sponsor and Tumaini for helping her become who she is today.

Thank you for giving tangible hope to Janet.  Her success is another example that given a hand-up, orphans and vulnerable children can succeed at any level of educational attainment.  More importantly, giving an opportunity to learn skills lending themselves to self-employment is critically important, especially in developing countries where unemployment hovers around 40%.  Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our Alumni Fund Scholarship.  You are making a difference and Janet is a perfect example.  If you would like to give a designated donation to our alumni fund, please do so TODAY. You can also send a check with “Alumni Fund” in the memo section.

Thank you for empowering the vulnerable children in Kenya.
