Bicycle Frames to Beneficial Flowers

This spring has brought about a lot of growth for Soil Cycle. When we first moved into our new place this past April, it was a gravel parking lot at best (see photo below). In a few weeks, with the help of dedicated board members, donors, and volunteers, we have created a space filled with plants and compost! We added 7 raised planters to the site, a hugelkultur, and numerous in-ground plantings, and the space is blossoming into one we can call home. We even added 4 new indoor worm bins and 2000 new wigglers to the family!

A few highlighted plants that we decided to grow at our site are echinacea, yarrow, comfrey, California poppy, bee balm, calendula, and lemon balm. While all are great for providing nectar for our precious pollinators. The additional benefits of their medicinal actions are another reason to get excited! Echinacea helps your immune system fight sickness, yarrow is a great first aid herb to stop bleeding, calendula flowers are used to make an oil that repairs and nourishes your skin, comfrey assists the body in healing broken bones (and is an impressive compost activator!), California poppy is a gentle sleep aid, bee balm is an effective antimicrobial, and lemon balm makes a relaxing tea for your nervous system. In addition to medicinal plants, we also planted a few tomatoes, peppers, collards, greens, and beans, with some oyster mushroom mulch on top (that might sprout mushrooms!) from our amazing neighbor, Front Street Fungi.

All in all, we’re incredibly excited to continue shaping the space into a multi-functional, beautiful, educational area. We do need all our members help to achieve our next goals of a giant outdoor compost bin system, more active worm bins, and if we raise the money, a large wall mural painted by local artists! Any donations are always appreciated, as is spreading the word about our cause, thank you members for your support! If you want to beautify a great part of Missoula, please donate and spread the word or email us to come help with working hands!

Special thanks to Z & J landscaping, 1000 New Gardens, James Walter and Skye Borden for the plant starts, all our wonderful supportive neighbors (Front Street Fungi, Love Boat Paddle co, Zoo City Apparel, Sacred Alley, Free Cycles), and our many amazing volunteers!

May's Sustainability Tip:

Little Stickers, Big Issue.

Every apple and avocado, peach, pear and plum has a history. With one quick glance you can learn how produce was grown. That tiny plastic PLU (price look up code) sticker found on individual fruits and vegetables sold in grocery stores are made of micro plastic and glue, creating a large issue for the environment and compost facilities all over the world. Researchers in New Zealand, Sweden and other countries and creating laser etched and biodegradable stickers. Solutions exist! Let's push our grocery providers to move in this direction, but until then, get creative, make art or find another way to reuse the stickers. Please just don't compost them.
