Summertime Adventures
Gnarled Tree
Photography by: Debbie Jordan
During the summer months in the Mid-Atlantic, the lush greenery and native wildflowers provide an abundance of opportunities for photography. A hike along a wooded path or a simple tree or flower in your own backyard can become an interesting and unique image. The challenge is in finding an unusual angle or playing with depth of field to create a photograph that is more than just a snapshot, but is art.

The image above was taken from underneath a large Japanese Maple tree. I had looked at the tree from various angles, walked around it several times, and then settled on this viewpoint to shoot. I was crouched down low under the tree with my camera angled up into the canopy. It was a bright August day, and the sunlight shown through the leaves creating a green luminescence. The complexity of the intertwining branches set against the variations of green is why I decided on this particular angle.

The photo below was captured at a sunflower field in Harford County after a rain shower. Although the large field was full of sunflowers, I focused on the petals of one sunflower which still had a large raindrop clinging to the petal. I was captivated by the image of the sunflower field reflected in the raindrop (click the photo below for a better look), and moved in for a closer viewpoint. The dark background is the out-of-focus leaves of several other sunflowers behind it.

And so, this ordinary field of sunflowers when viewed from a different angle, created an image that is out of the ordinary....more than a snapshot.....
Botany Bay V
Botany Bay V
Photography by: Benjamin DeHaven
I recently learned a few new editing techniques that breathe new life into pictures that before were not as dramatic as I hoped. So, I went back into my 2017 Utah and Arizona pictures and pulled out a few more that I have processed using the new techniques and am in love with them. The above image is one from Botany Bay, South Carolina that was on the website but I never felt it had reached its full potential... And then I applied my new editing skills and, wow, do I like the results. So if you are at all unsure of an image or don't feel the finished product is all you had hoped it would be, don't dismay. You never know what post processing skills you may pick up in the future that will make the photo really pop!
