PAW PRINTS for May 2019
May is both “National Pet Month,” and “National Chip Your Pet Month,” so we hope you’ll take special time to: appreciate your furry family members, consider adopting or sharing a shelter pet in search of a home, and make sure your pets are microchipped and have updated tags—keep them happy and safe! <3

With warm weather here, and summer soon to follow, be sure to take precautions to protect your animals from summer dangers. Be on the lookout for community animals in need as well.  Here are some safety tips:
DID YOU KNOW?
  • Last month 13 animals found their forever homes, 12 were reunited with loving families, and 4 were transferred to wonderful rescue partners--a total of 29 animals with a second chance. Your shares, donations, and volunteer hours help to make these happy new beginnings possible. Thank you all!
  • Our Lonely Heart’s Club pets (animals at the shelter more than 6 months) have low adoption fees of just $20!  We currently have 7 pets in the club--available cuties are: Thelma, Swirly, Brent, Brenda, Leon/Jackson, Camilla and Della. Please share their photos and stories, to help them find the forever homes they’re waiting and wishing for. You can see a story on sweet Jackson/Leon below, and see all of our available pets on our website www.fspca.org

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
  • Volunteer! We are always in need of volunteers to help with our adoption outings, shelter socialization, transports and fundraising events. You can learn more about volunteering with us here: http://fspca.org/volunteer.html. With springtime here, we can especially use shelter volunteers to help with landscaping projects, socialization for cats and dogs, and giving our canine shelter pets walks in the nice weather!
  • The shelter is currently in need  of Kitten dry and wet food. You can view and order from our Amazon Wishlist here: (http://a.co/iVY4MS0). Remember to go through Amazon Smile to increase your donation. Thank you all for your generous donations!
  • Have a birthday coming up or another milestone to celebrate? We are so appreciative when our supporters choose us as the beneficiaries of their Facebook fundraisers! We are always blown away by the generous donations that their friends and family make in their honor. These kind donations help us continue to provide the best care for the cats and dogs at the FSPCA while they wait to find their forever homes, so keep up the good work and thanks for thinking of us!

  • Foster! You can help one of our shelter pets heal, grow, and/or learn about life in a home. Each foster brings our pets that much closer to a furever home of their very own. One of our pawesome feline fosters sent us this cute photo of her current foster kittens (some of our “P” litter, who will be available this summer). Learn more about fostering with us here: www.fspca.org.
UPCOMING EVENTS! Don’t miss these special events, which support adoption, and the ongoing care we provide our homeless Fluvanna pets. You can see all of the details on our Facebook events page.

PUPDATES! We had a great time this month at the Eco Rodeo at James Madison's Montpelier! It was a lovely time hanging out under the trees and walking the grounds. Our adoptable dogs Camilla, Penny and Della really enjoyed meeting so many different people and made a lot of new friends!

CAT TAILS! This cutie is Mr. Tiggs. He is not only handsome, but he is so very sweet too!

Mr. Tiggs has had some medical challenges this month. Struggling to urinate and crying out for help, poor Tiggs made his way to the ER when he was brought into the shelter in hopes of unblocking some ugly bladder stones causing him blockage and incredible pain. He has since been released back to us for monitoring and recovery--a little over a week now--but we still need your help!
Due to the many days stay at the ER, and medications needed to save his life, his bill had reached over $1,000. Thanks to some wonderful donors, his bill has now decreased to $838. Could you help us lower it even further?

VETSS - Veterinary Emergency Treatment Service & Specialty, has graciously allowed donors to call them directly at 434-973-3519 to help lower his bill.  If you are able to help at all, all you have to do is let them know you are making a payment toward Mr. Tiggs vet bill with the FSPCA. They can accept credit cards over the phone, but no checks at this time.

We hope you will share this need with others who may be in a position to assist. Your gift, in any amount, makes a huge difference! On behalf of all of us at Fluvanna SPCA, we thank you in advance for whatever help you can provide. Thank you for supporting our life saving mission for all of these beautiful, deserving animals!

PAWESOME THANKS TO:

  • Thankful for our Rescue Partners! 4 waiting pets were transferred to rescue partners since our last update. Thank you this month to: CASPCA, BARK, and Potomac Valley Pekingnese Club, Inc .
  • Special thanks to Dr. Starkey and Jenn, Vet Tech, for volunteering their time for our Spring “Rabies Clinic”! Thanks also to FSPCA staffers Wen and Jessy, and volunteers Lisa, Mary, Kate, Linda and Pam. With their help, the FSPCA was able to provide a valuable service to the community by vaccinating 147 dogs and cats, with proceeds going toward animal care at the shelter.
  • Big thanks to our friends at PetSmart for hosting some of our pups and kitties (and volunteers) at their national adoption outing this month!
  • Thank you to Bonnie Mackin from Goosehead Insurance - The Allen and Mackin Agency, for volunteering to take our sweet Sandy to her “Rescue Pet Of The Week” spot on 99.7CYK this week, to help find her a new home! Sandy is approximately 7 years of age, and a hound mix. Don’t let her age fool you, she has plenty of spunk. Come meet her at the shelter today!
  • We would like to thank animal lover Nancy for hearing a sweet kitten meowing underground this week, community member Rose for lending us a trap, and our amazing staff for spending hours trying to rescue her! At around 3:30 that day, Miss Zion, finally came out of the pipes just enough to grab her. She is currently doing well in a foster home with Nancy, and is no longer crying for help. As you can see below, she is already loved so much! <3 It takes a village.

FOREVER FAMILY <3 In search of Forever… Can you say handsome? That's Leon. He's been at the Fluvanna SPCA for way too long. Do you have room in your heart and home for him?  Leon (aka Jackson) is a 5 year old, 67lb, neutered pit-bull mix, and has been with us for over 460 days and counting. You saw that correctly, 460+ days!! Leon is a total love-bug! He was adopted from the FSPCA previously by a wonderful family, but they very sadly ran into money troubles and had to bring him back to the shelter.

We were able to learn some invaluable information about Leon/Jackson when he lived with that family which will help him become a great member of another family! He is great with children, polite with cats, and he might also enjoy a fellow doggie sibling--but we would require a meet and greet prior to considering a foster or adoptive home which already has a dog in the home.

Leon previously had his left ACL/CCL operated on, and he does very well, however, he does occasionally limp. He does not appear to be uncomfortable, however, and it does not limit his activity in any way. Leon/Jackson is up-to-date on his vaccinations, and he is microchipped.

We know that one of our wonderful supporters likely has a space in their heart, or a friend or family member out there who would be able to provide the perfect home for Jackson, so won't you please share his story, or come out and meet him? As a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, Jackson has a low adoption fee of just $20 to help him find a forever family!
Have an FSPCA alum update to share? You can message us on our Facebook page, or email outreach@fspca.org. We love to see our furbabies with their wonderful Forever Families!

Please continue to share the love, and our homeless pets in search of forever, by sharing our newseletter, Facebook and Instagram posts!
