Young Leaders Network - The Results Are In!

The Young Leaders Network (YLN) participants attending the Boston YLN were surveyed in 2018 (15 of 75 respondents). The results showed that the YLN has been successful in building self-confidence and in improving communication and increasing civic engagement in participants as well as in effectively teaching skills, especially communication and teamwork. 102 YLN participants and their parents were surveyed in 2019 with a 30% response rate. Overall, results from the survey reflect participants’ positive experiences with the YLN.  Equally important, the results are consistently positive across the eight areas of questioning (social support, communication, advocacy, knowledge of epilepsy, self-care, leadership, confidence, happiness). Way to go, YLN! For more information or to get involved with a YLN, email Chanda Gunn.

Dr. Ed Bromfield Fund for Camp

It has been 10 years since we lost Dr. Bromfield.  His legacy lives on through the thousands of kids whose lives he has forever changed. Ed helped lead the charge to ensure kids affected by epilepsy had the joy and confidence-building that camp brings. This year, Epilepsy Foundation New England will host 15 camps for children and families affected by epilepsy, in 4 states, and for all ages and abilities. The Ed Bromfield Endowment Fund for Camp continues his legacy. Contribute here,

My Family Has Epilepsy

Our President/CEO, Susan Linn, has started a column to share her thoughts on living with epilepsy as a caregiver. Read her eighth post here:

For those who have been following my posts for a while, you know that my spouse, Chanda, who has epilepsy, had a “tricky” spring. At our May 18 Boston Walk for Epilepsy, we celebrated one month seizure free – though not one month fatigue, side effect, and other adverse-effect free.  We – Chanda’s health, and our family – are getting stronger every day. Last Monday, she was well enough to go horseback riding. This week, she is getting back to exercise with one-mile walks: this from an elite athlete who once spent 10+ hours a day training as an Olympic ice hockey player (while living with epilepsy). When I first met Chanda and we used to go to the gym together, it was intimidating for me. I try to keep in shape, and Chanda could literally run rings around me on the track, do more push-ups, sit-ups, etc. without even really exerting herself. I would be a messy pile of sweat while Chanda was looking for the next challenge. I run 4 miles a day, and today, Chanda is restricted from exercise. But soon, I pray/hope/believe that Chanda will run circles around me again.

This is riding the highs and lows of living with epilepsy. This week, she was here, and our family was well enough to go horseback riding. We are on a good path, and we hope the very same for you. Happy Trails!
