Save Westernport

AGL CEO Brett Redman is in Melbourne on 12 June to speak at the Energy Week Conference so Environment Victoria and Save Westernport have taken the opportunity to ask him to meet us and receive our petition of approximately 15,000 signatures.

Book your free bus ticket here!

Brett says one of his top three strategic goals for this year is social license. He's busy talking about it all around the country so get on the bus with us to let him know that he absolutely has not got social license for this damaging proposal. Make sure he gets a strong message that Westernport communities remain defiant and strong in our opposition.

It's just a few hours of your day and you might be that one extra person that makes all the difference.

Don't think one voice doesn't count. The only way to change things is to turn up. (Plus we'll have a good time on the bus to and from Melbourne meeting each other and sharing experiences and knowledge.)

Look forward to seeing you.

PS. If you haven't already signed the petition, do it now and book your free bus ticket here!

Oh, and if you'd prefer to meet us there, meet at main entrance to MCEC on Clarendon St at 10am. We'll finish at about 11am.

Have you got any petition postcards that need returning?
We need them by June 7th please email us to arrange where to deliver

Dame Dr Jane Goodall stands up for Westernport
One of the world's greatest women, Dame Dr Jane Goodall, understands the critical need to protect our biodiversity for the greater good.
On Sunday 5th May, I was honoured to have this picture taken for our campaign.  I asked her how she manages to switch off from thinking about the plight of her chimpanzees and the world's ills.
She responded by saying that she sees our planet as a jigsaw where all the pieces are black and that one little piece represents the area where you live and where you are trying to make a difference becomes green.
Put more simply; act local, think global.
I now have that visual firmly stamped in my mind. Westernport is our piece of green.
Deepest gratitude to Sean Willmore for inviting Jane to Westernport and for bringing us all together. We cannot thank you both enough for what you do. Louise.

Invasive Pest Worries for Westernport

Some of you may have noticed the Ocean Monarch (a mammoth drilling rig) currently in Westernport Bay. A supporter sent us an ABC News article (link here) from last December about the Ocean Monarch's owners refusing access to EPA Tasmania for a biosecurity inspection. What we want to know is how is it allowed in Westernport after this conduct?  The current Western Port News reports that: "Michael Harvey, chief executive officer of the Victorian Regional Channels Authority, said the Ocean Monarch needed “sheltered waters” so divers could work on “some issues” that had been found with its lower hull trim tanks."  And, "Concerns had been raised that marine pests potentially carried by the rig into the Derwent River and nearby waters could affect salmon farms."  So what of our own aquaculture in Westernport? Let alone our precious Ramsar natural environment!  SWP sent an email to the Port of Hastings who advised they had forwarded it to the VRCA. It's been four days and no reply.  We'll keep on it to get some answers.
