By completing 36 energy-efficiency projects in 2018, Toronto Community Housing earned $1.6 million in rebates—the largest contribution ever paid by Enbridge Gas under its incentive program for affordable housing providers.

To qualify for the incentive, Toronto Community Housing replaced 131 heating and hot water boilers in 28 buildings, and upgraded ventilation systems and building controls. This work has improved comfort and hot water reliability for thousands of tenants while reducing energy consumption and costs.

Since 2015, Toronto Community Housing has received $3.2 million in energy-efficiency incentives from Enbridge. The partnerships has enabled Toronto Community Housing to reduce its utility costs by more than $500,000 per year.

Donors gathered at the Investing in Our Diversity Scholarship (IIODS) breakfast on April 30, where they mixed and mingled with IIODS alumni over a light breakfast at the offices of Blaney McMurtry LLP.

Layla Ahmed, second-year life sciences student at the University of Toronto, thanked the donors and described how the scholarship helped ease her financial burden, enabling her to focus on her studies and maintain good grades.

A special thank you to Blaney McMurtry LLP for hosting the breakfast again this year. Their strong support makes the Investing in Our Diversity Scholarship experience a positive one for donors and recipients alike.

A record number of scholarships
The 2019 IIODS program will award a record 68 scholarships totaling $178,000 to help students pursue their postsecondary education or vocational training goals. Several new scholarships have been added this year through donations by TCHC President and CEO Kevin Marshman, members of the TCHC Board of Directors, W. Edmund Clark, the BOLT Foundation and Oxford Properties.

TCHC and partners working to increase tree coverage in several communities

Project partners and participants gather at 121 Kendleton Dr.
Project partners and participants gather at 121 Kendleton Dr. to celebrate the project.

TCHC and its environmental conservation partners gathered on May 15 for a guided tour of young trees planted last year in our Kendleton community to replenish trees lost due to ice storm and insect damage.

About 80 native trees, including American elm, Freeman maple, and sugar maple trees, were planted at 121 Kendleton Dr., 1901 Sheppard Ave. W. and Scarlettwood Court last fall. The project team from LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests), the City of Toronto's Urban Forestry division, Cohen & Master and Park People have continued to work with tenants to make sure the trees are watered and mulch is replenished. The new trees will go a long way in creating a vibrant, green community that promotes a healthy quality of life for tenants.

Record breaking numbers of youth attend YouthWorx job fair

TCHC staff interview youth during YouthWorx job fair.

More than 450 youth attended the YouthWorx four-day job fair to apply to join the YouthWorx team this summer. The number of youth who applied this year is double the number from 2018.

YouthWorx is an employment program that focuses on hiring youth between the ages of 14 to 29 as youth community workers. For eight weeks, the youth do various small-scale labour jobs, including community clean-ups, minor repairs, community beautification and painting. They also take part in workshops to enhance their employment-related skills and personal, professional and leadership areas of growth.

YouthWorx aligns with the City of Toronto’s Youth Equity Strategy to address and support youth who are vulnerable to violence and crime. You can visit our website to learn more about the program.
