The Coalition had the opportunity to table again this year at the 3rd annual Watkins Glen Faculty Kick Ball Game. This annual event is held to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House.

Coalition members attend Youth Retreat in Steuben County

On March 23rd, 4 adult and 5 youth Coalition members attended a Youth Retreat sponsored by the Steuben Prevention Coalition. This first annual event provided youth the opportunity to listen and engage in the issues in our communities and the resources available to them to: combat underage drinking, prevent marijuana and other drug use, prevent suicide and learn more about the latest vaping and JUULing trends. There were activities and giveaways throughout the day.
Committee Updates
Prevention
  • STAND partnered with Quest Adventure Gaming to organize a county wide drug-free community event  on May 4th.  The Star Wars themed event was open to all Schuyler County students in grades 7-12.  This free event also highlighted opportunities and activities available for youth in the community.
Implementation
  • STAND members Aidan Thurston and Gabe Grover gave their presentation on implementing beer gardens at community festivals to the Watkins Glen Village board on Monday April 15th.

  • Collaborated with Watkins Glen High School  and the Council on Alcoholism & Addictions of the Finger Lakes to provide Substance Abuse Prevention (SAP) Program students involving  incidents of infraction of the school districts substance abuse policy.  The program includes three sessions, two hours long.  Through participation and completing assignments in and out of the class students have the opportunity to earn a certificate of completion. Referrals to additional services will be made if needed.
Assessment
  • Youth Surveys will be completed in early June.  The Survey includes questions about youth use of alcohol and other drugs, including the use of JUUL.  Data on risk and protective factors will also be collected.
  • The committee will be looking into additional data collection methods including focus groups with youth, key informant interviews, and the adult community survey.
Opioid Task Force
  • The ODMAP Summit was held on April 5th in Bath from 9am-12pm.  Three Coalition members attended.
  • Schuyler County will begin using ODMAP thanks to a collaborative effort with the Emergency Management Office.
