                       TDMS TOP 10 COUNTDOWN
After 16 seasons, TDMS will come to an end on Saturday, June 29th. For the last 10 weeks of the show, Drew will share his TOP 10 moments of hosting Canada’s most listened to spiritual talk show.

Moment # 5: THIS ONE TIME - ON TDMS… “After a holiday break, Tim The Tool asked me what I did during my time off. I accidentally combined two responses together (‘Not much. I just hung out’ AND ‘Not much. I just laid low.’) I ended up saying, ‘Not much. I just hung low.’ Because Tim and I are actually 13 year old boys, it took us a very long time to stop our uncontrollable giggling!”

JOURNEY - Kevan Chandler

JOURNEY - Timea Eva NagyHuman Trafficking Survivor

Timea Nagy was twenty years old when she answered a newspaper ad in Budapest, Hungary, calling for young women to work as babysitters and housekeepers in Canada. Hired by what seemed like a legitimate recruitment agency, Timea left her home believing she would earn good money to send back to her family. What she didn’t know was that she’d been lured by a ring of international human traffickers and her life would never again be the same. Upon her arrival in Toronto, she was forced into sex labour in some of the city’s seediest nightclubs, starved and controlled by her agents, and brainwashed to believe she was to blame for her situation. The only way she’d be free was when her debt was paid—but, no matter how hard she worked, that debt seemed only to go up, not down. Out of the Shadows is a gripping, heartbreaking and eye-opening journey deep into the underworld of human trafficking and the sex trade, told in riveting detail by one brave survivor. At once tragic and powerfully redemptive, Timea Nagy’s story is one that will stay with you long after you’ve read the last page.

*Timea Eva Nagy is a human trafficking survivor, author, educator, inspirational speaker and one of the most recognized advocates against human trafficking in the world. She is the founder of Timea’s Cause, a corporation dedicated to the rehabilitation of sex slavery victims and to anti-trafficking education and training for the public, major banks, law enforcement teams, and other front-line professionals.

JOURNEY Update - Gabrielle Lavallee
Gabrielle shared one of the most horrific journeys of abuse we've ever heard. She was a member of The Ant Hill Kids, a cult led by Roch Theriault. Gabrielle was forced to endure humiliating torture for years. She was made to smear her face with the excrement that another disciple evacuated on the floor while he was being beaten up. After that, Thériault smashed her nose against the door and ripped her skull open with the door handle. Members of the cult had their pubic hair ripped out, their genitals crushed, some castrated, skulls balded by the handful, black eyes, lacerations, broken ribs, forced enemas, flogging, their vaginal areas burned with a blowtorch, scaldings, and other atrocities even too brutal to mention. Gabrielle assisted Thériault when he decided to operate on a member. He opened her abdomen, cut out a piece of her he deemed unhealthy, then asked his right-hand man to stitch it all up with a knitting needle. After that, the poor girl, who had to endure this hellish operation un-sedated, was commanded to stand up and walk without complaining. The next day this woman was very close to death, but Thériault demanded that she get up as usual. Then, realizing that she actually wasn't well, he made her swallow six eggs, put a mushroom and saliva plaster on the wound, made her take a very hot bath followed by an icy cold one. After all that, he was surprised when she died. The following night, he demanded that the remains be stretched out naked on his bed, and he spent the night alone with her. One night, Gabrielle tried to escape but was caught. She was brought back to the isolated commune, where Thériault pinned her hand to a wooden table with a hunting knife, removed one of her fingers with wire cutters, then amputated her entire arm. Drew was able to track down Gabrielle and she agreed, with some reluctance, to a rare interview in order to clarify exactly what happened during her time in one of Canada's most brutal cults.

JOURNEY Update - Marcella’s MomJust before a show in March 2015, Drew was told that a former guest / turned friend had just died. MS finally took Marcella Immacolata Trichilo. She was only 38. Since she was first interviewed by Drew in 2006, especially during his years of “public doubt”, Marcella was a pebble under his soul. Over time, her body slowly trapped and betrayed her. Drew was in complete awe of her unwavering dedication to the God who never answered her hope & prayers to be healed. Drew was honoured to have been asked by the family to lead the funeral service for this young, vibrant, stubborn and cheeky Italian woman. Marcella was tenacious grace!

Tommy Caldwell Author of THE PUSH: A Climber’s Search For The Path,
Star of Documentary THE DAWN WALL
THE PUSH is a dramatic, inspiring memoir by legendary rock climber Tommy Caldwell, the first person to free climb the Dawn Wall of Yosemite’s El Capitan. On January 14, 2015, Tommy Caldwell, along with his partner, Kevin Jorgeson, summited what is widely regarded as the hardest climb in history—Yosemite’s nearly vertical 3,000-foot Dawn Wall, after nineteen days on the route. Caldwell’s odds-defying feat was the culmination of an entire lifetime of pushing himself to his limits as an athlete. This engrossing memoir chronicles the journey of a boy with a fanatical mountain-guide father who was determined to instill toughness in his son to a teen whose obsessive nature drove him to the top of the sport-climbing circuit. Caldwell’s affinity for adventure then led him to the vertigo-inducing and little understood world of big wall free climbing. But his evolution as a climber was not without challenges; in his early twenties, he was held hostage by militants in a harrowing ordeal in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan. Soon after, he lost his left index finger in an accident. Later his wife, and main climbing partner left him. Caldwell emerged from these hardships with a renewed sense of purpose and determination. He set his sights on free climbing El Capitan’s biggest, steepest, blankest face—the Dawn Wall. This epic assault took more than seven years, during which time Caldwell redefined the sport, found love again, and became a father. The Push is an arresting story of focus, drive, motivation, endurance, and transformation, a book that will appeal to anyone seeking to overcome fear and doubt, cultivate perseverance, turn failure into growth, and find connection with family and with the natural world.

Rachel M. McCleary and Robert J. Barro  Authors of THE WEALTH OF RELIGIONS: The Political Economy of Believing and Belonging

Which countries grow faster economically—those with strong beliefs in heaven and hell or those with weak beliefs in them? Does religious participation matter? Why do some countries experience secularization while others are religiously vibrant? In The Wealth of Religions, Rachel McCleary and Robert Barro draw on their long record of pioneering research to examine these and many other aspects of the economics of religion. Places with firm beliefs in heaven and hell measured relative to the time spent in religious activities tend to be more productive and experience faster growth. Going further, there are two directions of causation: religiosity influences economic performance and economic development affects religiosity. Dimensions of economic development—such as urbanization, education, health, and fertility—matter too, interacting differently with religiosity. State regulation and subsidization of religion also play a role. The Wealth of Religions addresses the effects of religious beliefs on character traits such as work ethic, thrift, and honesty; the Protestant Reformation and its long-term effects on education and religious competition; Communism’s suppression of and competition with religion; the effects of Islamic laws and regulations on the functioning of markets and, hence, on the long-term development of Muslim countries; why some countries have state religions; analogies between religious groups and terrorist organizations; the violent origins of the Dalai Lama’s brand of Tibetan Buddhism; and the use by the Catholic Church of saint-making as a way to compete against the rise of Protestant Evangelicals.

*Rachel M. McCleary is a lecturer in the Department of Economics at Harvard University. Her books include The Oxford Handbook of the Economics of Religion.

*Robert J. Barro is the Paul M. Warburg Professor of Economics at Harvard. His books include Education Matters: Global Schooling Gains from the 19th to the 21st Century and Economic Growth. They both live in Massachusetts.

Moment # 6: “During a commercial break, I went to the men’s room. On the way back, a person walked out of the lunchroom and asked if I was Drew Marshall. I had no clue who they were. They told me they were here for the interview. I had no clue who they were. I expressed how happy I was to have them on the show and invited them into the studio. I had no clue who they were. As soon as we went to air, I asked the person to introduce themself. Then I remembered who they were. (As it turned out, they hadn’t actually confirmed their spot on the show that week, but we made it work.)”
