Immigration Minister Visits Hamilton

Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada visited Hamilton on Friday May 17, 2019. During his visit, Minister Hussen toured Sir John A. Macdonald School and the Hamilton Mountain Mosque and delivered a talk at the Central Public Library. Community members and service providers gathered as Minister Hussen emphasized the importance of immigration to the economic growth of our nation. He encouraged to "fight fear with facts." This library event was hosted by Empowerment Squared, a local community partner organization working to empower marginalized, newcomer youth in Hamilton.
According to IWC Executive Director Ines Rios, this is the first time a sitting Federal Minister of Immigration made a public appearance in Hamilton in more than 30 years.

HIPC Participates in Housing Summit

“Housing impacts all groups of newcomers including economic immigrants, refugee claimants, international students, and settling immigrants,” said Huyen Dam, speaking to city councillors, a capacity crowd in Council Chambers, and to many others viewing the livestream of the Hamilton Housing Summit held on May 21.
Author of HIPC’s recent report on local informal settlement networks, Huyen cited her research findings (PDF) that the biggest challenge for all immigrants currently in Hamilton is access to housing, noting that this prevents successful integration. “Context-specific housing programs is needed to address the challenges of specific populations, including immigrants.”
Also delegating was Suad Badri, member of HIPC’s Research and Evaluation Committee. Suad shared her lived experience of housing need, including living at four different addresses in five years as a newcomer to Hamilton.
HIPC was well-represented at the Summit: Larry Huibers of Hamilton Housing Centre acted as emcee, and HIPC Vice-Chair Daljit Garry was in attendance. HIPC’s newest member, SPRC Executive Director Kim Martin, also provided a public delegation that spoke the importance of public policy in creating affordable housing.

HIPC attended the Collision Conference in Toronto, the fastest growing gathering for technology and business professionals in North America, for a day of learning about research, data, and developing trends in content creation and storytelling. More than 25,000 visitors gathered in Toronto for Collision from 125 different countries. Sessions featured speakers from Hulu, the New York Times, Cousera, the Government of Canada and many more-- with the opening day featuring Canada's top official. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told hundreds of attendees that Canada’s thriving technology sector is a result of the country’s openness to immigrants, and he expressed his hopes that Canadians will continue to view immigration positively.
