The Week That Was: Cutting Down the Classics
A four-show week!
- Tuesday, May 28: Barret Ries of Pittsburgh joined the show to chat about records that are too good to skip even a single track. He singles out U2 and Ween.
- Wednesday, May 29: Between Omaha and New Orleans we learned about a band called Masked Intruder, checked in with the Claypool Lennon Delirium and mused on Tom Waits. We have the inimitable Paul Trap and Nola Zac to thank.
- Thursday May 30: We talked about it (and you may have too), and we finally did it. Which iconic double albums would have been better as a single disc? First up on the chopping block, a group you might have heard of, The Beatles, and their 1968 classic known as The White Album.
- Friday, May 31: So it came to pass that we think maybe the White Album would have been better as a single album, but do Jim and Patrick reach the same verdict while pondering The Rolling Stones Exile on Main Street? Only one way to find out... hit play.

Last But Certainly Not Least: Suburbs Pod New Release Central: May 31
New, fresh, still in the shrinkwrap. Get 'em at your local shop today!
Miley Cyrus – She is Coming (RCA) – The first of three planned six-song EPs, this new release features hip-hop-y production and collaborations with RuPaul. Good on the former Hannah Montana for a pursuing an adventurous career (although we’ll admit to pressing play on a little “Party in the USA” from time to time).
Gotobeds – Debt Begins at 30 (Sub Pop) – We will feature a song by this Pittsburgh post-punk band on Monday’s new music episode. The album is that good.
Frank Iero and the Future Violents – Barriers (UNFD) – The former guitarist for My Chemical Romance turns to producer Steve Albini for his latest solo album. The first single is called “Young and Doomed,” but you probably could have guessed that.
Duff McKagan – Tenderness (UMe) – The GNR guitarist goes solo and goes outlaw country, with Shooter Jennings producing. All that time on the road with Axl Rose will lead men to dark places.
Lee “Scratch” Perry – Rainford (On-U Sound) – This dub-reggae superstar has recorded dozens of albums over a long and respected career. This one is billed as a “return to form.” Honestly, we’ll listen to just about any form from Perry.
Pip Blom – Boat (Heavenly) – The music of this Amsterdam indie pop band has been featured TWICE on our new music episodes, back in October and again in February. And they hadn’t even released a full album yet. Now they have, and maybe there are other things going on in the world right now, but you’ll excuse us if we’re a bit preoccupied.
Sacred Paws – Run Around the Sun (Rock Action/Merge) – Another band with new music featured on the pod (episode 569), this Glasgow duo is big on rhythm. RIYL: Vampire Weekend, Paul Simon’s “Graceland,” Tom Tom Club, music.
Superchunk – Acoustic Foolish (Merge) – Twenty-five years after the great Superchunk released the masterpiece “Foolish,” they have rerecorded the album all-acoustic. Like the greatest episode of MTV Unplugged that never will be.
Wang Chung – Orchesography (August Day) – Another re-recording! The ’80s pop band reworks its classic songs with help from the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. (Said the first-chair violinist: “I studied at Julliard for this?“)
