2019 NSD Summer Institute

The 2019 NSD Summer Institute will be August 20-22 at Inglemoor High School. Several PD sessions are available for math teachers.

Desmos Activity Builder (3-12)

Tuesday, August 20, 8:30-11:30 am (3 STEM clock hours, not paid)
The purpose of this session is to explore the Desmos Classroom Activities and Desmos Activity Builder and how these tools can be integrated into instruction to support student learning. View the agenda or register for this session in Performance Matters.

Desmos Computation Layer (3-12)

Tuesday, August 20, 12:30-3:30 pm (3 STEM clock hours, not paid)
Desmos Computation Layer is a scripting language that allows components within Desmos Activity Builder to talk to each other. The purpose of this session is to explore Desmos Computation Layer and how it can be used to create Desmos Classroom Activities to support student learning of mathematics.
NOTE: Participants should have prior experience using Desmos Activity Builder before attending this session. If you haven’t created your own Desmos Activities before or if it’s been a while since you have, I suggest attending the morning session on Desmos Activity Builder.
View the agenda or register for this session in Performance Matters.

Make Learning Visible with Mathcasts (K-12)

Wednesday, August 21, 8:30-11:30 am (3 STEM clock hours, not paid)
Mathcasts are screencasts that focus on mathematics. A person’s written work is captured along with their voice as they explore a mathematical topic or solve a problem. Here are some examples: Mathcasts can provide teachers with information about student mathematical thinking that traditional paper-pencil assessments simply cannot. In this session participants will explore how mathcasts can be used as part of the formative assessment cycle, learn how to create their own mathcasts, and discuss ways to implement these into their classrooms to make student learning visible. View the agenda or register for this session in Performance Matters.

Core Focus Training for New Teachers (6-8 Math & 4-5 EAP)

Thursday, August 22, 8:30-11:30 am (3 clock hours, paid for new teachers)
The purpose of this session is to provide curriculum training for new teachers implementing the Core Focus curriculum for grades 6-8 mathematics in the 2019-2020 school year. View the agenda or register for this session in Performance Matters.

Other Sessions

Here is the link to the current list of all classes available at Summer Institute: Summer Institute Class List. This list will be updated regularly with new classes (Tech, Second Step and etc.). The registration deadline for all courses is August 15th.

Questions or Requests?

If you have questions about any of the math sessions or would like to make a request, don't hesitate to contact me. I am happy to help!

Curriculum Implementation

for Middle School Mathematics

Core Focus Quarterly Implementation Meetings

During this first year of implementation, teachers have met each quarter to plan implementation of Core Focus instructional materials and give feedback on the NSD Scope & Sequences. Our final quarterly meeting for 6-8 math teachers will be on June 6, and our final meeting for 4-5 EAP teachers will be on June 11. Please see 6-8 Math Implementation PD for meeting agendas and resources.

TOSA Support

I would love to meet with you, your department, and/or your PLC as you plan for next year. If you would like to collaborate to plan a lesson or unit, co-teach a lesson, or use an Engaging Math Activity with your students, please don't hesitate to ask. :)

Other Professional Learning Opportunities

Online PD Course: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All With Effective Math Teaching Practices

In this online learning course, participants will focus on the instructional practices presented in the book, Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All by NCTM. The course consists of 8 modules:

Two modules will be available to teachers during each quarter of the 2019-2020 school year. Teachers may register for as many or as few sections as they desire. For each module, participants will build understanding of the math teaching practice, apply it in the classroom, and reflect on its effect on student learning. Teachers may complete these activities for each section at their own pace during the quarter. Participants are responsible for purchasing the book, Principles to Actions (NCTM, 2014), prior to beginning this course.

Northwest Math Conference, October 2019

The 2019 Northwest Mathematics Conference will be held Thursday, October 10th through Saturday, October 12th, 2019 at the Tacoma Convention center and the neighboring Hotel Murano.

The Northwest Mathematics Conference brings together mathematics teachers from all levels of primary, secondary, and undergraduate education to learn and share about mathematics and pedagogy. This year's featured speakers include Julia Aguirre and Dan Meyer. I am also honored to be presenting a 3-hour Desmos workshop on October 10th!

Registration is now open. Click here for more information.

Classroom and School Support

Please contact me if I can help support you. This year I have had the opportunity to:
  • meet with groups of teachers at several elementary schools to learn about the priorities in the CCSS,
  • teach model lessons from our new middle school math curriculum in EAP and middle school math classes,
  • participate in math department planning sessions at several middle schools as they move toward increasing the number of 8th graders enrolled in Algebra,
  • plan 3-Act Math Tasks with teachers,
  • help teachers plan and implement Desmos activities in several classrooms.
If I can support your work with students or your department, please don't hesitate to ask!
