Opening This Weekend: The Secret Garden
TOWN & GOWN PLAYERS PRESENT
The Secret Garden
Writer: Lucy Simon and Marsha Norman
Director: Lucy Haskill
Musical Director: Nathan Trivers

Performances will be held June 7-8 and 13-15 at 8:00pm
and June 9 & 16 at 2:00pm
at the Town and Gown Theater
(115 Grady Avenue, Athens, GA)

Our final musical of the 2018/2019 season is the Tony Award winning and much loved story, The Secret Garden, by Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon.

The charming classic of children’s literature is reimagined in a beautiful musical style. Orphaned in India, 11 year-old Mary Lennox (double casting Brooke Costigan and Charlee Bragg) returns to Yorkshire to live with her embittered, reclusive uncle Archibald (Cole Dziedzic) and his invalid son Colin (Nate St. Onge). The estate’s many wonders include a magic garden which beckons the children with haunting melodies and spirits from Mary’s past who guide her through her new life. The Secret Garden is a compelling tale of forgiveness and renewal.

This production is directed by Lucy Haskill, a graduate from the University of Georgia who moved to Los Angeles to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Lucy is a film/television actress (Sun Records, The Leisure Seeker) and television Casting Producer (The Wall, Spin the Wheel).  “This show doesn't have all the glitz and glamour of a lot of the big musicals, which is what I love about it. The music is just so beautiful; I cry every time I listen to the score. I wanted to focus on the relationships of the characters, the themes of love and loss and overcoming adversity. It's a show that helps us remember what it's like to believe in magic and gives us a chance to see the world through the eyes of a child. Everyone who's ever lost someone can relate to these characters and their journey to healing.”

Musical direction is by T&G newcomer Nathan Trivers, also a graduate from the University of Georgia. While at UGA, he enjoyed the role of music director for several productions including Big Fish and Mary Poppins. Since graduating, Nathan has been teaching private music lessons at Monroe’s Stuever Studios, directing music at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, and music directing for theater productions in Monroe and Athens.

The Secret Garden is a musical based on the 1911 novel of the same name by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It premiered on Broadway in 1991 and ran for 709 performances.

Tickets are $12-$20 and can be purchased online at www.townandgownplayers.org or in person one hour before the performance.

Second Stage Presents
The Pillowman
By Martin McDonagh

In an interrogation room in an unnamed totalitarian dictatorship, Katurian Katurian, a writer, is being interrogated by two detectives. Next door, Katurian’s mentally disabled brother Michal waits. The detectives want to know why Katurian’s stories feature gruesome plots about child murder and torture, and in particular, why they seem to mirror a string of recent child murders in the area. This brutal dark comedy from Martin McDonagh, the master of the horror-comedy, poses unanswerable questions: Can stories hold the power to cause atrocities? Where is the line between truth and fairy tale? Is a life of horror worth living at all? Drawing on inspiration as diverse as Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Kafka, and Antonin Artaud, The Pillowman is a dark, twisty, and utterly unforgettable masterpiece from one of Ireland’s most treasured writers.

Toil and Trouble will be performed at Town & Gown Players, 115 Grady Avenue, for one weekend only:  June 28-29 at 8 p.m. and June 30 at 2 p.m.  Tickets are $5 and can be purchased in advance at townandgownplayers.org.

SET VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
What gets seen on stage even MORE than the actors?  That’s right!  The SET! At Town & Gown, this all important theatrical element is 100% built by volunteers.  All cast members agree to participate in set calls but everyone is welcome to be a part of the fun.

Every Saturday, when there is not a show scheduled, work begins at 10:00 AM and ends sometime in the afternoon (depending on the show).  Stay as long as you can.

Don’t think you have to be a master carpenter to participate.  All skill levels are useful, and you might even learn a thing or two!  Each show has a crew member who “choreographs” the work, “directs” your performance, and leads the applause at the end of the day!

The success of any production only occurs through us working together.  Please come play with us at set calls.
