APPOINTMENTS

Luke Barber has been appointed Director, Information & Instructional Technology Services. Over his 14 years at UTM, Barber has held several management roles with the I&ITS team, most recently as the Acting Director of Infrastructure, Solutions and Security, and was responsible for launching multiple portfolios, including the datacentre operations, information security and business analysis teams.

The Institute for Management & Innovation celebrated the warm weather with an outdoor campus cleanup. The "May in Motion” initiative, now in its second year, encourages IMI staff and faculty to incorporate wellness and healthy living into their day with fun events throughout the month.

AWARDS & HONOURS

David McMillen
Associate Professor David McMillen of the Department of Chemical & Physical Sciences is among four U of T researchers to receive the 2019/2020 Connaught Global Challenge Award. McMillen will receive $245,400 to develop innovative synthetic biology solutions to critical health problems in developing countries like the Philippines and India.

Assistant Professor Cosmin Munteanu of the Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology is among 50 researchers across Canada to receive funding from the AGE-WELL Network of Centres of Excellence. Each research project will receive $30,000 to create new technologies, services and/or policies that have real-world impact. Munteanu will create interactive apps to reduce social isolation for older adults.

Fourteen UTM researchers have been awarded a total of $3 million in funding from the federal 2019 NSERC Discovery Grant program. A further 17 research projects have been awarded funding through the Research and Scholarly Activity Fund, an annual funding opportunity through UTM's Office of the Vice-Principal, Research.

Shuttle Bus Fare Increase
New fares for the intercampus shuttle service between UTM and St. George took effect Wednesday, May 1, 2019. The new fare for one-way trips increased to $7.00 per ticket. The new shuttle bus semester pass increased to $650. For information, please contact the Transportation Office.

Andrea Olive
In an interview with CBC News, Associate Professor Andrea Olive of the departments of political science and geography gave Saskatchewan a failing grade for the province's conservation policies.

@utm_dining: Did you miss the Indigenous Menu Tasting event? We worked with @utmhospitality  to showcase local and regional Indigenous cuisine and culture. UTM Culinary Director and Chef Donna Tobias welcomed Indigenous chefs to the UTM kitchens for a lesson on preparing Indigenous dishes, including delicious sugared frybread with fresh berries.
