Your PCC writes...

It was good to hear this week that the UK Government is scrapping the charges for making calls to the 101 non-emergency number and is investing £5 million into the service.

It is essential that we remove the barriers to reporting crime and ensure that the police are
available, accessible and responsive to the community 24 hours a day.

That is why we launched a social media desk within our force control room at beginning of the year.

Residents can access Gwent Police 24/7 through Facebook and Twitter, as well as the traditional channels.

It is an excellent example of efficient and effective service delivery that meets the modern demand from our residents for online communication.

You can access the Gwent Police Facebook page here and Twitter here.

Fit and Fed

My team visited Newport Live’s Fit and Fed project at the Rascal Hope Centre in Newport this week.

Newport Live run nine Fit and Fed sessions across Newport, engaging with about 300 children a week during the school holidays.

As well as being provided with breakfast, lunch and snacks, children have their energy channelled into sports and other activities which helps keep them away from crime and antisocial behaviour.

My office contributes funding to this project through Positive Futures and it is an excellent way to keep young people active and positively occupied during the summer holidays.

Support for Victims of financial crime

I attended a briefing on economic crime last week given by the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners.

Economic (financial) crime can happen to anyone and over the last four years Action Fraud has seen a 40 per cent increase in reports from victims. One in 17 adults has been a victim of this kind of crime, losing an average of £3,000. Many people feel too embarrassed to tell anyone or report their loss to the police.

In our Connect Gwent victims hub we have a financial abuse coordinator and safeguarding officer who provide advice and support to victims of financial crime and fraud.

If you are a victim, or know someone who is, you can contact the hub for advice on 0300 123 21 33.

Safeguarding hub visit

My office visited the Newport Safeguarding Hub this week.

The team heard how the hub is helping to increase recognition of domestic abuse amongst older adults, and also how children and young people, and their families, are being identified for support before reaching crisis point.

This has certainly been a successful model and discussions are now taking place about how it can be developed across Gwent.
