For many years, neighbors have come together to create neighborhood watch groups. These groups encourage neighbors to look out for each other and promote safety for the community. Seminole County certainly encourages these groups and the Sheriff’s office has laid out an effective chain of command to ensure that individual programs run smoothly. The Sheriff’s office also allows for interested residents to set up an appointment with the office to answer any questions that they may have about starting a neighborhood watch group in their own community.
Each group should be made up of three components: the Coordinator, Block Captains, and the other residents. When a suspicious incident occurs and a resident who is part of the neighborhood watch sees this incident, they must first report it to the Sheriff’s office. It is very important that residents do not engage or try to become involved in the situation. After reporting to the Sheriff’s office, the resident should then contact their Block Captain who will alert the Coordinator. The Coordinator is to make sure that all the Block Captains are aware of the situation so that they may alert the residents on their block.
