PAWsitive Steps Program
Buddy (CARL dog) pictured here with his teacher/trainer Rachelle Solis, is getting ready to enter into the 16-week training program "Pawsitive Steps."
“The Pawsitive Steps program offers last-chance Ventura County shelter dogs and at-risk youth an opportunity to work together toward mutual rehabilitation. The program is designed to save shelter dogs and change the lives of at-risk youth.. “The Pawsitive Steps program will help Juvenile Facilities youth develop personal and vocational skills through the career pathway component of the program. Youth selected for the program will learn patience, compassion, empathy, restorative justice principles, and responsibility by caring for, training, and ultimately helping find forever-homes for dogs.”
Dogs will be selected from local rescue groups and the Ventura County Animal Services shelter. Over the course of 12-16 weeks, program staff will instruct Juvenile Facilities youth in canine training techniques. The dogs will reside full-time with the youth at the Juvenile Facilities. The selected youth, through the knowledge and skills they will acquire in the Pawsitive Steps program, will provide basic obedience, house training and socialization to shelter/rescue dogs. While helping to alleviate the rising number of dogs at local shelters, the program will also provide positive reinforcement training and socialization skills to the dogs; making them significantly more adoptable. The program will build confidence and compassion for our youth, improving their social skills, social competencies, problem solving skills, and communication abilities; while reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness.
At the completion of the program, the dogs will be available to the public for adoption. The program offers youth the opportunity to receive certified training that will help them find employment upon release.
At the end of 16 weeks, Buddy and his handlers will go through a K-9 Good Citizenship Test and upon Buddy passing, he will graduate!
Thank you to Sharon for photos and to Debby N for the article suggestion

National Foster A Pet Month!
Fostering at C.A.R.L.
Canine Adoption and Rescue League relies on a network of “foster homes” to provide a safe and loving environment while they await adoption into their permanent homes.
Canine Adoption and Rescue League provides each foster family with food, vet care, and training assistance, as necessary. The only thing the foster family needs to provide is a loving and nurturing home environment for the dog. Also, CARL's foster dogs are transported to adoption events by their fosters, so they can be seen by potential adopters.
.
One of the major benefits of “foster” care, as opposed to the traditional shelter, is that the dogs/puppies are being socialized in the environments into which they are being adopted.
Foster care also gives us the ability to provide prospective adopters with a very accurate profile of the prospective “adoptee”, regarding general temperament; house breaking; socialization level with other dogs, cats, and children; whether or not the dog is a jumper, digger, or chewer, etc.
Such daily care and close observation also provides us with the opportunity to address behavioral problems before they become too instilled.Interested in fostering? Please fill out an online Foster Application (click to open)
Becoming a Foster Parent
The only requirement to be a Canine Adoption and Rescue League foster family is a love of animals, a dedication to helping those who cannot help themselves, and a safe and secure home environment.
Please contact us about being a foster parent. It can be a very rewarding experience for the foster and the dog. You can help Canine Adoption and Rescue League fulfill its goal!
Available Foster Dogs
Click here to view all of our foster and adoptable dogs at C.A.R.L. This contains information about the dogs we currently have available to foster (and adopt). We try our best to determine the breed of the dogs. However, with rescue dogs there is always an element of guesswork and there is usually no guarantee as to the exact breed mix of the dogs.

Recycling Fundraiser
The CARL Kennels needs your recyclable plastic bottles and aluminum cans. Instead of throwing them in your recycling container at curb side, why not separate them in bags of aluminum cans and plastic bottles and bring them to the kennel. All money goes back to the repairs and upkeep of the kennel such as shade tarps, poop bags, etc. It’s good for the can, it’s good for the dogs.
This is an ongoing fundraiser. Contact C.A.R.L at http://info@carlvc.org If you would like to donate recyclable bottles, cans.
