Hi folks,

The June 2019 newsletter will be hitting your inboxes on Monday, but we also have an event scheduled for Monday evening that we don't want you to miss, so we hope you'll forgive us for an extra email this month.

Also, if you haven't had lunch yet today, come on over to the library! A delightful fairy godmother just brought us a platter full of finger sandwiches and fruit. Yum!

June 3: Presentation by Anne B. Gass -- We Demand: America's First Cross Country Automobile Trip for a Cause

Join us on Monday, June 3 at 5:00 PM for a presentation by Anne B. Gass, author and women's rights historian. She will present We Demand: America's First Cross Country Automobile Trip for a Cause.

In September 1915, four women embarked in an open car from San Francisco’s Panama Pacific International Exposition on the country’s first cross-country road trip for a cause. They were carrying a petition to Congress and President Wilson demanding an amendment to the United States Constitution enfranchising women. Over primitive, poorly signed roads and through blazing heat, rain, snow, and mud, they battled their way across the country, stopping in towns along the way to collect more signatures and to raise awareness that most women in the country were prohibited from voting. Anne retraced their route in 2015 and blogged about it at www.suffrageroadtrip.com. This lively talk will be accompanied by historic slides.

Anne B. Gass is the author of Voting Down the Rose: Florence Brooks Whitehouse and Maine’s Fight for Woman Suffrage. Gass speaks regularly on Florence Brooks Whitehouse and women’s rights history at conferences, historical societies, libraries, high schools, and other venues. She helped advise the Maine State Museum on its 2019 exhibit in honor of the 100-year anniversary of Maine’s ratification of the 19th Amendment giving women
the right to vote. She also serves as the Maine Coordinator for the National Votes for Women Trail.

This World in Your Library presentation is brought to our community through a partnership with the Maine Humanities Council, Margaret Chase Smith Foundation, and Thomaston Public Library. Light refreshments will be served. Free and open to all. For more information, contact the library at 207-354-2453.
