Weekly Parliamentary Diary

With the European Parliamentary Elections results announced on Sunday, I am delighted to congratulate the fantastic Jackie Jones MEP on being elected to the European Parliament.
The results of the EU elections were undoubtably very poor for Labour and it is clear that we lost votes to the unambiguously pro-European parties.
It’s now more important than ever that we move to a clear and unambiguous support for a confirmatory vote on any Brexit deal, as set out by First Minister for Wales, Mark Drakeford yesterday.

EU citizens denied the right to vote
This week I wrote to Bob Posner, Chief Executive of the Electoral Commission, on behalf of constituents who were denied a vote in last week's EU elections. I have received a number of complaints about this issue from constituents and I am determined to ensure that they receive satisfactory answers on this. We need a proper investigation into why EU citizens were denied their democratic right to vote.

I am calling for an urgent overhaul of the UK's plastic and packaging waste system. It is now time to introduce a properly thought through "Polluter Pays system" so that those that produce waste take responsibility.
This is what I call for in my backbench Bill on Extended Producer Responsibility (packaging).
The news this week that Malaysia is sending back waste from Wales dumped on it beaches reinforces that we must take a stand to tackle the damage that non-degradable waste is doing to the environment. My Bill aims to do this.
You can read my comments here and here.

Urging action on climate change
I alongside 125 of my parliamentary colleagues signed the above letter calling for the U.K. to host the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (Cop26). The U.K. must look to build upon the Paris Agreement to respond to the climate emergency. A great way of showing this intention is to host this important global summit and help set the global climate agenda.

The Urdd National Eisteddfod
It was lovely to have The Urdd National Eisteddfod in Cardiff Bay this week. I went along to see all of the wonderful stalls with a great range of activities going on. The Urdd National Eisteddfod is one of Europe's largest cultural youth festivals attracting over 40,000 competitors annually to the local and regional eisteddfodau and over 15,000 competitors to the Urdd National Eisteddfod.
Whilst there I also stopped by to talk to the Welsh Youth Parliament stand at the Senedd. It's always great to talk to young people with a passion for politics.
