One of the highlights of May was our trip to Santa Barbara Island aboard the Peace Dive Boat. What an amazing day! In May you usually expect green, cold water in California, but on this day the water was 58-62°F and the visibility was 60+ feet! Captain Steven and Chartermaster Thomas chose the three dive sites in perfect order so that we can avoid the approaching weather, and divers enjoyed the best Santa Barbara had to offer that day.

The beauty of Ocean Safari trips is that we plan the dive sites so that everyone with various dive experiences and backgrounds can come and thoroughly enjoy their dive day. Each dive site will have something for everyone, from photographers, freedivers, hunters, and students alike. The weather is getting warmer and the water is becoming nice and blue. If you haven't been coming out because it has been chilly, it is now time to wake up and get wet!
Our new underwater photo seminar and workshop hosted by our resident pro photographer, Mike Brock, got off to a great start. Beginning Underwater Photography Seminar and Pool Photography Workshop were held in May, and the Openwater Photo Workshop is scheduled during our June 1st trip to Santa Cruz Island. Don't let the "beginning" in the seminar title fool you. This is a seminar for underwater photography enthusiasts of all levels. Several of the participants have been shooting for years, and they all took home some valuable tips and techniques.

The next seminar is June 29, with pool workshop on July 13 and field seminar on July 14. You can sign up for individual sessions or all three.
Did you know that Ocean Safari is an official Freediving Training Center? We held a professional level freediving certification course over the Memorial Day weekend. Taught by industry-renowned, freediving champion Seamus Callaghan, our divers went as deep as 100 feet in one breath, and improved breath-holding techniques to be able to hold our breath on land for over 5 minutes!

Whether you are just interested but never tried before, or have been freediving for years, we have classes to improve your skills. We have ongoing freediving pool workshops (next one June 27), basic freediving seminar, and our next professional level certification course will be in September. The techniques learned in our courses translate to scuba diving as well, so even if you don't want to be a spearfishing champion, you'll definitely become a better scuba diver!

The next Freediving Level 1&2 Certification Course is scheduled for the Labor Day weekend, August 31 to September 2.
