Prothonotary Warblers Confirmed Near Nest Tubes
This last March, several CKAS members placed several Prothonotary Warbler (PROW) nest tubes at various locations along streams, ponds, and lakes in central Kentucky. PROWs, sometimes called "swamp warblers," like marshy waterside areas where they can nest in cavities and find ample insects as food to raise their young. Such nesting cavities are increasingly limited by competition from other bird species, most notably from European Starlings who tend to live near people, not swamps, but who take over the cavities PROWs prefer whenever habitat near water is developed.  Consequently, PROW populations are in serious decline, a 14/20 Conservation Concern Score from the North American Bird Conservation Initiative (12+ is considered "Watch List").

The tubes CKAS made and placed are specifically designed to exclude larger cavity nesters, making them particularly attractive to swamp warblers. Still, we still weren't sure we'd get a PROW living in the first dozen tubes we placed; the tubes we made and donated them to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources a few years ago had an initial acceptance rate of about 15%. But as we approached the spot we'd set out tubes on Lake Reba, we distinctly heard the "Sweet! Sweet! Sweet!" song of Prothonotaries and we were able to locate both a male (who posed for us nicely as pictured below) and a female. Our next "big purchase" will likely be a peeper camera so we can look inside the tubes and see/count eggs/chicks with minimal disturbance.

Surveys & Questionnaires: Other Citizen Science
CKAS has received requests to pass along two studies that might be interesting to our members—not studies of birds, but studies of birders and their birding habits. We've long known that birders' contributions to the local economy and that birding's health and wellness benefits are frequently overlooked. Here's two chances to help researchers get a better handle on what we do:

1) Discovering the link between between the attributes of individual birders in the United States and the type and intensity of bird conservation action they take. Survey (10-12 minutes of your time) here. Results will be used to improve public policies for bird conservation.

2) Discovering why Audubon resonates amid the din of hundreds of nonprofits. Survey (3-5 minutes of your time) here. Results will be used to hone Audubon's message to expand the group's wingpan, direct advertising dollars, and guide Audubon policy and conservation work.

Your participation in these two surveys is greatly appreciated. As we know, the more data we, as birders, can provide, the better our understanding of birders, birding, and how policy makers can help support us in protecting the birds we love.

On July 1st, a new pool of $1 million in state tax credits will be available to Kentucky donors. The Endow Kentucky Credit is a boon for CKAS's Endowment Fund and for CKAS donors: it's your chance to double the impact of monetary gifts to CKAS's long-term financial stability and to receive an extra 20% directly off your Kentucky tax bill.

Starting July 1st and running "until funds run out," your donation to the CKAS Endowment Fund will have a net cost of only half or maybe even a third of what you give. Unlike regular tax deductions, tax credits are taken off a donor’s state tax bill dollar for dollar. In order to receive the credit, donors must get preapproved by July 1, 2019 using a current year form that should be posted on the Kentucky Department of Revenue web page soon. If you would like more information about this opportunity, information about the Endow Kentucky Tax Credit can be found here or you can e-mail President@CKAS.org.  We'd love to talk with you.

Two Rare Birds
Help CKAS "Win"
Global Big Day 2019

Fayette County once again beat out Jefferson County for Global Big Day 2019's species count, albeit by only two bird species. Lexington's final tally came to 152 whereas Louisville's cut at 150. CKAS birders were boosted to the winner's circle by the unexpected presence of five Black-Bellied Whistling Ducks that stopped at Jacobson Park on their northern migration and by two White-winged Doves that seem to have taken up in a local yard even though Lexington is miles from their normal breeding grounds at the southern edge of the United States.

CKAS members attributed their continued dominance (not that we're competitive) to teamwork and division of labor: CKAS helped coordinated the efforts of several local birders to lead walks at local hotspots, target likely species, and cover as much of Fayette County as we could in the 24-hour period. If you would like to help with next Fall's Big Day, which will be held in October, watch for notices in upcoming newsletters and join us for another win.
Your Kroger Plus card can helps you help CKAS and our local birds every time you shop. CKAS participates in Community Rewards. Just select Central Kentucky Audubon Society (Org. #65224) as your Reward Charity of choice. Doing so will NOT affect your fuel point savings, but will help CKAS increase its share of Kroger's quaerterly donations. We currently earn about $200 a year with this program; more families linking their Kroger Plus cards to our cause would greatly help us help birds. Check the bottom of your next Kroger receipt to make sure it says: "At your request we are donating to Central Kentucky Audubon Society."
