July 2019

From The Director

Library Clerk Jacob started with the library as a volunteer when he was 12 years old, became a page in 2012, and has been working as a clerk for two years. Jacob is going off to finish his degree and become a librarian. We will miss his never-fail positive attitude towards patrons, fellow staff, and any project that came his way. But we are proud that he will take a little bit of Red Hook Public Library with him as he goes out to make the world a better place!

Thank you, Victoria!
You may have noticed things blooming around the library lately. This is only thanks to volunteer, and Master Gardener, Victoria, who takes a pittance of a flower budget and turns it into masses of cheer. She labors all season to make sure our gardens flourish. If you see her out there in the sun, please say "thank you" for all the hard work she does.

Coming this month

Roger & Lenny

Music on the Porch Returns!

Join us for the second Music on the Porch concert of the year. Four local musical acts - David Hemingway & Ethan Campbell, Matthew Kobalkin, Debbie Fisher & Paul Kean, and Roger & Lenny - will be performing while you dine al fresco on the front lawn. Grab a fresh-grilled dinner from our local VFW or bring a picnic of your own design. This is what summer is all about!

Programs for Adults

Amy and Selina at annual All Abilities Adults tie-dyeing extravaganza

What are your favorite page-turning summer reads? Join us for our Guilty Reads discussion series for adults. We celebrated Mystery and Fantasy in June and will celebrate Sci-Fi in July, followed by Romance and Graphic Novels in August. The genre programs are in addition to the regular book groups in July. The Shakespeare group will be discussing The Taming of the Shrew, while the afternoon group chews on Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain, and the evening group checks out Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers.

A special opportunity this month is Poems for Politicians. Get your frustrations out of your head and onto paper. No writing experience is necessary for this creative, exploration of words and ideas with Dennis Rush. Dennis’ day job lies in IT, but he is also an accomplished artist and writer who is currently completing an MFA in poetry.

Programs for Teens

Crash Lab wall is ready and waiting for the watermelon brigade

As of July 1st there is still room in several summer camps for tweens and teens. In Crash Lab, prospective go-kart engineers will talk to a representative from our Highway Department and a local auto mechanic, then build their own cars to test out their designs. (We apologize that some watermelons may be harmed in the making of this camp.)

In Video Reality Lab, participants will dissect fight scenes from popular video games such as Zelda, Streetfighter and Punch Out, with experts from Red Hook’s Mixed Martial Arts Collective

If you are 13+, join us for Fashion Design Lab. You’ll design, draft and sew a garment with expert help from professional textile designer and college sewing instructor, Elizabeth Halpern from Modern Print Craft. All labs require registration.

Events for Kids and Families

RHPL's History Quest breakout boxes were a hit at Historic Red Hook's History Happening event

There are 3 options for storytimes this summer: Rec Park playground on Mondays, Wednesday mornings at RHPL, and Family Storytime followed by open drawing every Saturday at the library.

Red Hook Pop-Up Library will be, well, popping up all over town bringing free books and STEM projects. Look for us at the Rec Park, Holy Cow Ice Cream, on Maple Lane, and in College Park. Red Hook Pop-Up Library is a collaborative project of RHPL, Mill Road Elementary libraries, and Bard College Center for Civic Engagement

Discovery Day is an opportunity for all the summer camp students to share their experiments, discoveries, and creations with friends, family, and the public.

If you have a kid 5-10 who loves Legos, note we have a week-long Lego Camp with Alyssa in August. Please call to register.

All library programs are free and open to the public and take place at the library unless otherwise noted.

Behind the Desk
By now you’re aware that RHPL circulates some unusual items. You can generate a list of these items by doing going to "advanced search." Enter an * in the keyword field; choose “equipment” (or “toy”) in the dropdown menu for format; and select Red Hook in the collection dropdown. This trick can be used for any material format such as DVD, audiobooks, etc..  It's a handy way to browse what's available on the shelves from the comfort of your couch.

Happy Independence Day!
We will be closed for potato salad and pie on July 4th.
