Matariki planting at the Maitai Dam
The Nelson City Council and the RSA invite you to join in on this plahnting day. This project is supported by the Matariki Tu Rakau Programme and is part of the many initiatives around the country marking the 100-year anniversary of the end of the First World War. It is also part of the Government’s One Billion Trees Programme.
Where: Maitai Dam
When: Sat 22 June, 1pm – 3 pm
What to bring: Please wear suitable footwear and bring a spade and gloves if you have them.
Head to the Maitai Dam kiosk and follow the gravel road along the river that crosses the dam spillway.

Friends of the Maitai Planting Day at Groom Creek
We plan a smallish planting day at the Groom Creek Wetland – mainly to infill and replace trees lost in the hot summer drought.
Where: Groom Creek – just past camping ground
When: Sat 13 July, 11am - 2 pm
What to bring: Please wear suitable footwear and bring a spade and gloves if you have them.
Don’t forget you can turn out as well every second Friday afternoon (2-4pm in winter) to help with plant care at Grooom Creek. Details on Facebook

Friends win on Forestry
After many years observing the river, supported by recent research results, we are more than ever
convinced the problems of water quality, toxic algae and biodiversity decline in the river are linked with
sediment from forestry. Solutions include diversifying species, reducing the size of cut at any one time
and increased riparian planting. Steve Gray gave a great presentation to Council on this in May, followed up by
Tom Kennedy at the Annual Plan hearings. As a result, the Council will convene a Forestry Forum to
get all the stakeholders (forestry and logging companies, Iwi, conservation groups, Cawthron, Friends of the Maitai) talking as a group to come up with changes to plantation forestry practices in the Maitai catchment. We see this as real progress for the Friends of the Maitai agenda of ensuring the Maitai is a cool, clear, clean, flowing river.
