Europe Remembers on Tour!  UK & Normandy

Europe Remembers’ team and special guests gathered in London on May 20 at the Churchill War Rooms to announce the official kick-off of the Liberation Route Europe's International Hiking trail project. The historic route stretches from London to Berlin, tracing the footsteps of the western Allies during the liberation of Europe in 1944-1945. The Liberation Route team then went on to hike the following 3 days from Alton to Portsmouth, commemorating the “friendly invasion” of American/Canadian troops in the UK and the preparations for D-Day. The UK leg concluded on May 23rd at the D-Day Story Portsmouth.

On the second leg of the tour commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the Europe Remembers on Tour team visited each of the five Normandy landing beaches starting in the American sector of Utah and Omaha Beaches and finishing in the British/Canadian/Allied/Commonwealth sectors of Gold, Juno, and Sword Beaches.

Interactive Digital Map brings D-Day back to life

The Canadian Research and Mapping Association (CRMA) recently launched an online portal with the results of the first phase of Project 44. CRMA is a non-profit and veteran led organisation which focused with Project 44 on the digital mapping and preservation of 20,000 WWII mapped unit positions from Canadian, British, American, Free French, Polish and German armies.

Drew Hannen, CRMA’s Executive Director and Nathan Kehler, Director of Geomatics & Research, recently visited our Utrecht office to share the results of their work: an easy-to-use interactive WWII map bringing D-Day back to life, now available for historians, the general public and tour guides. Nathan and Drew and colleague Julien Brown built a rich database and archive of 400 original maps from the Second World War, over 70+ Canadian Army units, 37 Royal Canadian Air force squadrons and a mixed force of Allied and Royal Canadian Navy ships.

All First Canadian Army War diaries from June 6 to August 31 have also been digitized and included, starting with D-Day and spanning over the following 87 days. We invite you to visit the Project 44 online portal and explore this interactive map with its valuable resources for unique experience of the weeks following the Normandy landings.
