SciELO Brazil signs with Publons a partnership to benefit the Brazilian scientific community
17 June 2019: Philadelphia, Unites States of America and São Paulo, Brazil
The SciELO/FAPESP Program in its mission and objectives to contribute to the improvement of scientific journals of the SciELO Brazil collection, in the context of the SciELO Network, has just established an agreement with the Publons system of the Web of Science - Clarivate Analytics to support the peer review processes.
The journals of the SciELO Brazil collection will have access to the Reviewer Connect search service based on data from Publons and the Web of Science, including SciELO, to help editors find, select and connect with the most relevant referees pertinent to the manuscripts’ subject. The journals will also have access to Publons' Reviewer Recognition Service, which assigns and registers the appropriate credit to reviewers. The services will be available to indexed journals, regardless of the online manuscript management platform used by the journal.
Alex Mendonça, Coordinator of SciELO's Manuscript Management Online Services, stated that the agreement is part of SciELO's effort to strengthen the journals’ editorial capabilities, particularly in manuscript evaluation processes. “By providing access to a database of qualified researchers compatible with the research being evaluated, our expectation is that the quality of the reviews increases and the processing time decreases. Moreover, reviewers recognition through Publons is an important step towards a more open and transparent peer review process, in agreement with the alignment of SciELO with best practices of open science.”
Andrew Preston, director of Publons, commented: "It may be difficult for publishers to find available reviewers with the right expertise, and this can slow down the publishing and discovery processes. Publons can help SciELO to develop Brazil’s scientific journals, connecting editors, reviewers and researchers, and ensuring that reviewers get due recognition for their efforts."
Publons can also be used by researchers to track their publications, citations, peer reviews, and journal affiliations in one place. Among Publons’ benefits, we can mention:
- All your publications can easily imported from the Web of Science, ORCID or your bibliographic reference manager (e.g. EndNote, Zotero, or Mendeley);
- Reliable citation metrics automatically imported from the Web of Science Main Collection;
- Peer review activity verified and validated through partnerships with thousands of academic journals;
- Record available for download summarizing your academic impact as an author, editor and journal peer reviewer.
