In this edition: Find out more about the work of our BME team, learn about applying for the Healthy Neighbourhood Fund, how to use the Ageing Well service and the new REBOOT early intervention project. You can read lots of recent stories from the neighbourhoods we work in, get involved with community networking in your area and find out what the Sustainable Development Goals are and what they mean for TDC. As always there are lots of upcoming dates for your diaries and this month we have staff news from the youth team

TDC is committed to making a level playing field for everyone to have a chance, no matter who they are.

We work on Equalities & Inclusion projects with different partner organisations across the city, offering a wide range of ways to reach people who, for a variety of reasons, might be less able to find out about things that are going on locally and across Brighton & Hove.

Our Equalities and Inclusion team works across the city with a wonderfully diverse mixture of people. Click here to meet the team and find out what they do →
Then read on to learn more about some of the work we're currently delivering...

MESH – The Migrant and ESOL Support Hub
At TDC we are thrilled to be a part of a new service supporting migrants, refugees and asylum seekers as they integrate themselves into life in Brighton & Hove.

Within our city there are a large number of organisations providing ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and delivering other migrant services, so navigating these can sometimes be difficult. The new service, known as MESH (the Migrant and ESOL Support Hub) provides a one stop shop - linking these services into a network and is designed to be the first point of contact for whatever support is needed.

Community Navigation Plus
TDC is proud to be partnering with Impetus to deliver Community Navigation Plus - a free-of-charge social prescribing service in Brighton and Hove that links people from BME backgrounds with community services and groups to improve their health and wellbeing.

The service focuses on non-clinical issues and our community navigator works with individuals to help them identify and access local groups and services and find information relevant to them.

BME 50+ group
TDC supports the BME 50+ group - a social club based at the BMECP which aims to reduce isolation amongst older BME people. We recently joined them on a trip to the Chattri Memorial at a service to remember all the Indian Soldiers who fought on the Western Front in the First World War. Read more →

Department of Health volunteering project
Since 2016 TDC has been working in partnership with the Department of Health on a volunteer project. We were looking for people to work alongside our team across Brighton and Hove to help support health and wellbeing projects for young people and within BME communities. Read a blog from TDC's Cal who co-ordinated the project and hear from volunteers Temi and Nichola

Refugee Week 2019
TDC partnered with Voices in Exile to tell people about our services at an event to celebrate Refugee Week 2019. Largely organised by refugees and groups working with migrants the event was well attended with plenty of opportunity for people to meet, chat and share experiences. Healthy Neighbourhood Fund

Every year TDC supports community organisations to give out small pots of Public Health funding known as the Healthy Neighbourhood Fund.

This funding is a great way for people to develop health and wellbeing related community activities, projects and groups which meet any of the following health priorities:

  • Healthy Eating
  • Active Living
  • Mental Health and Wellbeing
  • Ageing Well
  • Maintaining health on a low income
  • Raising awareness about key health messages (e.g. on smoking, alcohol or sexual health)

TDC administers the Healthy Neighbourhood Fund in the following areas:

Tarner area, Albion Hill, Carlton Hill, Edward Street, Phoenix Estate, Pankhurst area, Craven Vale Estate, Hollingdean, Moulsecoomb & Bevendean, Saunders Park and Bates Estate.

In 2019, small grants of up to £500 are available (depending on the area) and most are currently open to applications from small community groups. The first deadline for this year is Friday 13th September (specific details to follow as soon as they are available).

Please speak to your local Community Development Worker for details about the fund in your area and to apply please contact Cal Chester on 01273 234769 or by email: calchester@trustdevcom.org.uk

Ageing Well

The new Ageing Well service is now in full swing. Led by Impact Initiatives, the aim is to deliver joined-up services for older people across the city through a single dedicated phone number. Older people can call the number to find out about activities, support and events across the City – whether it's places to go, group activities, befriending, information and advice or volunteering opportunities. TDC is proud to be an Ageing Well partner - delivering the service in Woodingdean and to older people in the BME communities we work with.

If you would like to enquire for yourself or for someone you know, the number to call is 01273 322947

REBOOT early intervention project

REBOOT, the Sussex early intervention project for 11-17 year olds, is now fully up and running.

REBOOT is a personalised, one-to-one support package for children and young people. The unique REBOOT programme takes a partnership approach to support vulnerable young people who are at risk of being targeted by organised crime groups and divert them away from crime at an early stage. With the support of a youth coach each child or young person will get opportunities to access activities which may provide a new way to focus themselves and create positive chances in their lives.
We are working in partnership with other local organisations to deliver this service which is funded by the Sussex PCC.

News from the areas we work in

East Brighton
This year TDC gained funding to work with Maker Club to bring robot building and coding workshops to estate-based youth clubs. We sought to demonstrate how making is connecting and how collaboration over fun and challenging activities can reduce loneliness. Watch a video about the project →
Edinburgh!
TDC's Cal ran the Edinburgh marathon last month to raise funds for the fantastic ADHD Aware - a local charity which supports people living with ADHD. He got round in 4hrs and 34 minutes - Well done Cal! He is aiming to raise £500 for the charity - can you support him with a donation? Click here to donate →

Craven Vale

The Craven Vale community had a wonderful turn out to their very first 'Blossom Day'.
Nature walks gave people the chance to learn about the community orchard, the wildlife garden, the rare Elm trees in Craven Wood and the butterfly-friendly wildflower banks around the estate. And everyone got involved in crafts such as making solitary bee homes and hoverfly lagoons. Find out more on the TDC blog →

Portslade & Portland Road
We've been working with organisations across Portslade to help build a Neighbourhood Action Plan. Based on local knowledge and experiences it identifies priorities, resources and opportunities for people living and working in the area. TDC has been working in Portslade since 2000 helping address some of the challenges faced by residents including isolation, loneliness and access to activities and services. Youth Team

On 12th May, a group of young people from Brighton & Hove headed to Goodwood Motor Circuit to race an F24 kit car they had built from scratch. This was a great collaboration between TDC, Sussex Police and St Giles Trust and the group achieved fantastic results on the day - they came 9th out of 56 teams and won best newcomer! Brighton & Hove, like many cities and towns across the UK, is impacted by violence, vulnerability and exploitation related to drug dealing, serious & violent crime and the criminal & sexual exploitation of children, young people and vulnerable adults. A wide range of statutory, community and voluntary sector organisations including TDC are coming together this June to raise awareness of these issues across the city →

Last month's East Brighton Coffee and Croissant morning was a bit different to normal! Ricky Perrin from Sussex Bears Basketball Club invited participants to have a go at wheelchair basketball - something none of them had done before.

This proved to be a useful experience when thinking about residents accessing services for the first time, and made everyone consider what it feels like when you are out of your comfort zone. Read more about the session →

Coffee & Croissant hub networking sessions are for service providers in the city. They provide a chance to meet other people working in the area and find ways to collaborate and work together more effectively.

The events take place in:
  • Hanover, Elm Grove and Tarner
  • Moulsecoomb and Bevendean
  • East Brighton
  • Hangleton & Knoll
Anyone who provides a service in the areas is welcome to come – find out more via the link below and please book in advance so we know how many croissants to buy:

What are the Sustainable Development Goals and what do they mean for TDC?

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out an agenda for a better world by 2030 – fairer, safer, healthier, more prosperous and in better balance with nature.

TDC is looking at ways we can work with local community groups to achieve the SDGs, and working in partnership with organisations across the city to do this.

Read about the project on the TDC blog and get in touch if you are interested in learning more: kayeduerdoth@trustdevcom.org.uk

Staff news

We are delighted to have now restructured our Youth Team and have been able to appoint Kate Barker and Caroline Vitta as Area Managers for the North and East of the city respectively, and Sean Older and Sophie Murphy as Senior Youth Workers working under each of them. The new structure should enable a greater focus on each of our two geographical areas of (youth work) delivery in the city and a more responsive approach to matters as they arise, supported by our fantastic teams of Youth Workers and Volunteers.
