New Hotline to Support Alberta Farmers After Serious On-Farm Incidents – ruralrootscanada.com (AB), June 17, 2019:  There is a new hotline to provide informed and compassionate support for farmers dealing with a serious incident on the farm. Jody Wacowich is the Executive Director of AgSafe Alberta. She says the line is there to help farmers manage a serious incident. “If a farm or ranch has an OH&S officer coming out for an incident and in turn an investigation they’re more than welcome to call this number and get some support from one of our AgSafe employees, who can help them understand the process and what is required of them and what is being asked of them from the OH&S perspective,” says Wacowich.

AgSafeBC Held Progressive Ag Safety Day at Sardis Elementary – fraservalleynewsnetwork.com (BC), June 15, 2019:  On Friday, AgSafe held a Progressive Agriculture Safety Day for over 140 students at Sardis Elementary in Chilliwack. AgSafe, British Columbia’s agricultural workplace health and safety association promotes the importance of child safety education as part of their safety initiatives. Wendy Bennett, the executive Director for AgSafe spoke with FVN about what Ag Safety Days focus on.

Wage Deferral Bill Could Be to the UCP What Farm Safety Was to NDP – cbc.ca (AB), June 14, 2019:  In the early days of the Alberta NDP government, an emboldened caucus and cabinet of rural and urban MLAs introduced a bill that would dog them for the next four years. It was known as Bill 6, officially called the Enhanced Protection for Farm and Ranch Workers Act, but it was more commonly known as the farm safety bill. Under the bill, introduced in November 2015, fiercely independent farmers, not traditional supporters of the NDP in the first place, were required to have Workers' Compensation Board coverage for their employees, perform hazard assessments, and adhere to a series of occupational health and safety rules.

Everyone Invited to Family Safety Day July 3 – sachem.ca (ON), June 14, 2019:  Family Safety Day has evolved a lot since its inception. Over 40 years ago, “there had been three bad accidents in the community, and people thought they didn’t need any more of this,” said Bill Switzer. “So, 4-H stepped up and started doing a safety program. At the time, it was very agriculturally based … it’s more urban-based now.” Switzer is the co-ordinator for the annual event, which alternates each year between Rockton and Binbrook. This year, it will be back in Glanbrook. “There’s a little bit of something for everybody. It’s all demonstrations, with audience participation,” Switzer said. “It’s a community event; it’s a family event.”

Prince Edward County Prodded to Move on Emily Project – quintenews.com (ON), June 13, 2019:  We’ve been hearing a lot about FARM 911: The Emily Project lately.  Just this week, Stirling-Rawdon kicked off the program and previous to that Quinte  West installed its first 911 sign alongside a farm field. However, there are concerns that FARM 911 is going nowhere in Prince Edward County. A representative from the Ontario Federation of Agriculture told county council’s Committee of the Whole Thursday that there was a commitment from council last year to roll out the program but it seemed nothing had actually happened. (Related article: Farm 911 Rollout to Return to Council Horseshoe).

Ag in Motion Ramps Up for Its Fifth Show – grainews.ca (The Prairies), June 12, 2019:  It’s hard to believe it possible to pack more iron and information onto 320 acres of good Saskatchewan farmland, but that’s what organizers of the 2019 Ag in Motion (AIM) farm show are promising as they gear up for the fifth annual show that will be rolling July 16 to 19, just northwest of Saskatoon. More exhibitors, more field demonstrations, more crop and livestock production and management information, more food, more entertainment. The outdoor farm show that began as a good idea in 2015 and has exceeded all expectations in just five years is expanding in all categories as it prepares to welcome an estimated 35,000 visitors this year to the Ag in Motion site near Langham, about 30 minutes from Saskatoon, along Highway 16.

On a cold November day in 2017, Boswell was feeding his cows in Stockton and left the gate open. When he returned to feed them, he realized three of the cows had escaped. He managed to corral two of them back with his tractor, but one was still loose. So he got on the nearby all-terrain vehicle and chased the cow. But then, his ATV flipped.

Roll Bars Increase Survival on Tractor Rollovers by 99% – wsaw.com (US), June 14, 2019:  The leading cause of death on farms is tractor rollovers and overturns. That's why one of the most important safety features on a tractor is a roll bar. But most tractors don't have them. "If a tractor rolls over the driver is 3% likely to survive without that roll bar," explained Melissa Ploeckelman, of National Farm Medicine Center. A roll bar increases that survival rate to 99% says Ploeckelman.

Northern Ireland Farmers Warned of 'Extreme Danger' of Slurry Mixing After Four Narrow Escapes – belfasttelegraph.co.uk (Ireland), June 10, 2019:   Farmers have been warned to be careful of the extreme dangers of slurry mixing after four "narrow escapes" at farms in Northern Ireland over the past two weeks. The BBC has reported that in each instance emergency services had to be called after someone was overcome by fumes. Two cows in the shed at the time were overcome by the fumes and died.

Farmer Stress Affects the Whole Family – (Editorial) thegazette.com (US), June 3, 2019:  In my work as a crisis counseling and suicide-prevention trainer, I know all too well that Iowa’s mental health resources are scarce. It’s not at all controversial to say that. Even in bigger cities and the most populated counties in Iowa, it’s difficult to get the help you need when you face a mental health crisis. Imagine you’re living in a small town and you are experiencing a mental health crisis. Where do you go? Emergency rooms and other resources are overburdened, not to mention expensive. We have to do better for rural Iowans, and quite frankly, we are at a critical juncture.
