DUG Network
Mid-June Urban Gardener Newsletter

Hello Gardeners!

If you're receiving this newsletter for the first time welcome!

We recently partnered with the amazing folks who manage Rooting DC, DC's Annual Urban Ag Festival, to increase the number of people receiving this free, solicitation-free, all volunteer managed, newsletter.

Rooting DC and DUG Network both share a common goal to promote, support and grow through building connections, the DC urban Ag movement.  Since Rooting DC only focuses on one amazing event a year, we decided to partner and continue Rooting DC's mission by combining our email lists for the DUG Newsletter to continue promoting, supporting and connecting people in the Urban Ag movement all year long.

Although its super easy to unsubscribe to this newsletter at anytime, please take a second to check it out first.   The DUG Network newsletter is a comprehensive list of workshops, events, programs, job openings, grants and gardening tips for the urban AG, food security and environmental world, happening in the greater DC area.

We send a newsletter out every two weeks, and 1-3 times a year (3 is our self imposed max) we highlight an urgent and important cause or program (never a solicitation).  We're very sensitive about not overloading anyone's inbox.  Also the DUG Network is managed by an all volunteer cooperative that does not try to profit in any way.

Check Out The DUG Network Resource Website

DUG Network also has an amazing website promoting over 500 different urban Ag, food security and environmental organizations and resources operating in the greater DC area.

Need Help Promoting an Event or Resource?

If you know of any garden, food and environmental events or opportunities that the community should know about, please email us the details (you can just respond to this e-mail) to include in the next newsletter.

Need Help Bringing this Newsletter Beyond the Computer

In addition, we need your help to bring awareness to all these amazing resources to all people in DC regardless if they have access to a computer or not.  We're looking for people or organizations that can help us print and post this newsletter so people without regular computer access can see these reources.  If you can help us print this newsletter and post it in any public place( libraries, community centers, coffee shops, barber shops, etc) please let us know.

Impact Justice’s Food in Prison Project Survey
Is documenting the short- and long-term effects of eating in confinement, analyzing the structures that created our current system, and identifying opportunities for change.  Please help us collect data and stories about the impact of the prison food experience on people across the United States through our Food in Prison survey. The primary audience of the survey is people who have been incarcerated and experienced eating in confinement firsthand.  We also welcome friends, family, and community members who have been affected by this issue, as well as the general public, to share their thoughts on food in prisons through the survey.
To fill out the survey, visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/foodinprison or email foodinprison@impactjustice.org to receive a paper copy that can be printed and mailed.

Help Save the Sankofa Bookstore
Sankofa Bookstore, is asking the community to step up to support a tax abatement bill, proposed by a DC city council member, which would waive their property tax for 10 years. As a direct result of gentrification in Washington DC, Sankofa’s annual property tax rate for 2019 reached a staggering $30,000. The ever-increasing rate is no longer just a hindrance to their growth, but a threat to their stability as an institution. In response to our request, CM Brianne Nadeau drafted a bill requesting tax abatement for 10 years. B23-0075 - the Mypheduh Films dba Sankofa Video and Books Real Property Tax Exemption Bill (attached) waives our property tax from October 2019 to September 2029.This adjustment in our expenses will help Sankofa to continue providing its space and service to our community, and support the different creative works of people of color in the greater DMV area in an improved manner.

Participating Store locations
Healthy Corners is a pioneering venture that is sustainably expanding healthy food access in DC’s food deserts. We deliver fresh produce and healthy snacks to corner stores in DC’s low-income communities, offering produce to corner stores at wholesale prices and in smaller quantities than a conventional distributor. DC’s First Food Runner Program "Food Rescue US"
One of the biggest barriers to donating food is transportation. Food Rescue, a national food rescue platform, is a FREE food runner app that coordinates volunteers to help transport food that would normally be thrown away (40% of all food ends of in the dump!) from a donor (restaurant, grocery, caterer, farmers market, event, etc.) to a place that feeds people in need. Food Rescue US is looking for volunteers, food donors, receiving organizations, and anyone who wants to lend a helping hand. Please email Kate Urbank, the DC Site Director, at kate@foodrescue.us with any ideas or questions and sign up at www.foodrescue.us to volunteer or receive more information

Tips about Cabbage Loopers
By Love and Carrots. For more tips follow them on Instagram

#loveandcarrots: Be on the lookout for green cabbage caterpillars. You can find them on any plant in the brassica family (kale, collard greens, broccoli, cabbage and kohlrabi). This is how we manage them:
➡️ Pull off the caterpillars, squish them or throw them to the birds. I prefer the latter...
➡️ Strip badly damaged leaves that aren’t helping the plant photosynthesize.
➡️ Spray BT every 14 days as an added measure to get any rouge caterpillars left behind.
➡️ Keep your beds covered with rowcover/remay to prevent more cabbage moths from laying eggs on your kale.
