Associate Pastor Candidate: John Hunt
The Associate Pastor Search Committee is excited to present unanimously John Hunt as our candidate for Associate Pastor at Calvary! Our search committee has found John to be a thoughtful, kind, Kingdom-centered person, and in every conversation and interaction with him, we always left wanting to talk with him more. We believe his experiences will bring so much to help nurture, challenge, and empower the Calvary family as we move forward in the days ahead.

John, his wife, Molly, and their three children will be in Waco June 29-30 to meet the Calvary family with a vote in worship that Sunday. There are several opportunities to meet them over the course of the weekend:

“John Hunt is a compassionate, creative, and energetic minister. For the past 15 years, I have observed his intentional discipleship of numerous young adults and the creative spiritual formation experiences he constructs which help people encounter God in new ways. As a thinking Baptist who has a deep concern for the marginalized, and who seeks to help others grow into an awareness of God’s work in the world and how to join it, John Hunt will be a great asset for the community at Calvary Baptist Church.”

What’s Saving Your Life?:
Losing Your Life
Noel Forlini Burt

A Word from John Hunt
Dear Calvary,
I am excited to meet you because of all the wonderful things I have heard about your community and have already seen in the members of the search committee.

I’m writing to share with you a bit about myself. I have been an instructor at Logsdon School of Theology for the past year, and before that, I served as the Baptist Student Ministry Director at Hardin-Simmons University for twelve years. I am excited about this opportunity to serve within your community because I believe that the relationship between missions and spiritual formation is vital. As the church, our work in the world requires the reflection of spiritual formation to be meaningful and fruitful, but that same reflection must be grounded in our active engagement in the world. Pairing these two disciplines makes certain that our heads and hearts and hands are always in conversation.

I’d love to share with you a bit about my family. My wife Molly spent the last 5 years teaching dual-credit English to seniors and starting a creative writing program at Abilene Wylie High School. We are parents to Miles who is going into the seventh grade and loves to play sports and also loves a good fiction series. Our daughter Lucy is going into the sixth grade and loves animals and devours books like an anteater eats ants. Sunny is the youngest in the family and is going into the third grade. Sunny likes to do cartwheels, always.

We commit to praying for you as you determine the right path for Calvary and we ask that you pray for our family as we do the same. We cannot wait to meet you!
Sex Education Workshop - Worries and Wonderings
In just a few weeks, former Calvary member and current professor for Baylor’s Garland School of Social Work, LeAnn Gardener, will be offering a special workshop on sexual education. If you are a parent with children of any age or just someone who wants to know more about how to talk about sexual development, the body and boundaries/safety, etc. in healthy ways, this would be a wonderful opportunity for you!

The workshop, entitled “Worries and Wonderings,” will be held on Thursday evening, July 11th from 6-9pm (more information can be found on the flyer). It will focus on “how to create a channel of communication with your kids that is rooted in mutual respect, approachability, and vulnerability”

Please feel free to share this flyer with anyone you think might be interested and don’t forget to RSVP to annaclark@aol.com
Bible Club 2019
Calvary family, I am so thankful for all of your love, support, prayers, and hard work to help Bible Club happen this past week! We were able to share God’s love with about 45 children, both children who regularly attend Calvary and children from our neighborhood. Our amazing volunteer crew of about 60 adults and youth did a fantastic job helping prepare dinners, rounding the children up from station to station, leading music, crafts, recreation/games, and Bible story time, and so much more! Bible Club was truly a beautiful picture of God’s kingdom here on earth (see some pictures below).

Though it rained on our Kick-off night Sunday, we didn’t let that slow us down! We moved the bounce house into the Welcome Center (a first to be sure!), had games in the hallway, and painted faces and ate dinner in the fellowship hall. This first night, we learned that even “when life is unfair, God is good” (Nahum 1:7). The second night of Bible Club, we began our normal rotations through the stations and learned that “when life is scary, God is good” (Psalm 23:4). The third night of Bible Club was a great reminder for adults and kids alike that “when life changes, God is good” (Psalm 106:1), the fourth night reminded us that even “when life is sad, God is good” (Psalm 34:18), and the final night we learned that “when life is good, God is good!” (Nehemiah 4:14). I was encouraged and overjoyed that about half of our Bible Club children learned their memory verses and were able to say them to their leaders. I pray that these little reminders will forever be tucked away in their hearts where they can serve as whispers of truth to these kids for the rest of their lives (Psalm 119:9-11).

Bible Club was great fun, but even more than that, it was a time when the Calvary family came together to be God’s hands and feet to His beloved children. I pray that the relationships built this last week will continue to grow across differences in age, economic status, upbringing and background so that we continue to grow more and more into the image of God and His kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven.

I am so excited to see how God will continue to move in the lives of our community as we remember what we learned this past week at Bible Club; that God is good even when life is unfair, scary, when it changes, is sad, and yes, even life is good!

God’s peace be with you,

Jenni Chilton

June is Alzheimer's Awareness Month
For the month of June, Faith Health Waco is focusing our attention on Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Although there is no prevailing single cause of Alzheimer's, researchers have concluded that the disease can develop from several factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and environment.

Here are some facts to consider:
  • 5.8 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s and related dementias
  • Every 65 seconds someone in the US develops Alzheimer’s
  • More than 16 million adults in the US are caregivers to persons with Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia

Calvary Summer Worship Series -  "What's saving your life?
Calvary, this is a space on my back porch that has become holy ground for me and my family. In this space we share meals, watch baseball games, read books, and tend to plants. These little lights that hang in the trees by our porch are on an automatic timer, and they remind me that light can give us hope and joy in the midst of the mundane. I give great thanks for our little porch and for these twinkle lights.

This summer, we are asking ourselves, "What's saving your life?" What are the practices, activities, and experiences that your life depends upon, and do you make space for them in your day to day life? Or, do your to-do lists, busy schedules, and the stressors of day-to-day life take precedence most days? Maybe it’s time for us to rediscover what our lives truly depend upon – and what they don’t.
Where are you experiencing the Spirit of God in unexpected places this summer? Share your responses online using the hashtag #lifesaver.

Contributing Financially to Calvary
Each week, we present our offerings as an act of worship. However, many of us pay for the majority of our expenses online or through an automatic-withdraw from our bank accounts, and each month when we pay our expenses, we can present an offering to God in these ways too. You can give to Calvary online at http://cbcwaco.net/give-to-calvary, but please note that 1-2% of your gift will go toward transaction fees. If you would like to set up an automatic withdrawal from your bank account, which has no transaction fees, please contact Phil Sitton at psitton@cbcwaco.net
