Rebranding SNAP-Ed in California

Name and Logo Change Statement for Use with Stakeholders and Partners

For Advisors and Program Supervisors/Managers:
The following is a template email message that can be used with local stakeholders regarding re-branding – what it means and what you and your community need to know.

"
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education (SNAP-Ed) in California is now referred to as CalFresh Healthy Living.  This is part of a statewide branding initiative that the SNAP-Ed oversight agency - California of Social Services (CDSS) - has led over the past year.  The purpose is to better inform California eligible residents about the variety of services offered by the state to access healthy food and lifestyles in their communities. This  re-branding of the SNAP-Ed program has occurred across the five state level implementors  --CDSS, California Department of Public Health (CDPH), California Department of Aging (CDA), Catholic Charities of California (CCC) and UC CalFresh Nutrition Education Program.

As a result of the new branding effort, UC CalFresh Nutrition Education Program is now referred to as CalFresh Healthy Living, University of California.  This new name better reflects the portfolio of work which involves nutrition education aligned with policy, systems and environmental change initiatives in California communities.  A launch of the new name, logo, and website occurred April 15, 2019.

CalFresh Healthy Living, University of California is administered in 32 counties through University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) offices  locally. Local partners  may include: UC 4-H, EFNEP, and Master Gardeners, other CalFresh Healthy Living (SNAP-Ed) providers,  and local non-profits.

Please contact your local representative with any questions or to work with us.

CalFresh Healthy Living, UC in Action!

Harriet Tubman Child Development Center gets Healthy Eating, Active Living Mural, UCCE Alameda

In partnership with Oakland Unified School District, UC CalFresh Alameda County has partnered with a local muralist to install three Healthy Eating, Active Living murals at child Development Centers in Oakland. The second of FFY19 is a school located in West Oakland at Harriet Tubman CDC. This site is engaged in the following UC CalFresh interventions: Go Glow Grow, CATCH for ECE, gardening, Smarter Mealtimes, and playground stencils.

The design process started with a meeting with the school staff, UC Calfresh and the muralist. Here we gleaned ideas from staff around healthy eating and active living imagery that they wanted to see at their school. The collective themes were fruits and veggies, play, and gardening.  The mural is centrally located on the children’s playground, transforming the space from a rather uneventful wall to a bright, happy, colorful space with lots of opportunity to link the mural to great topics to discuss while outside. In an effort to build school community around the mural, we started with an open paint day for students from every classroom to come out and help “paint” the mural. This was a huge success with all our little artists ready and excited to paint on the wall. Over the course of the next two weeks, the students were able to watch the mural come to life, and often stopped by to give hugs to the muralist and brought her flowers on her last day. It was a beautiful event from inception to completion.

Photos of the artists in action and the completed mural are below.

Happy Valley Primary Stencil Project, UCCE Shasta, Trinity, and Tehama Counties

In May, Chanelle Vincelli, a CalFresh Healthy Living, University of California Educator in Shasta County, collaborated with the Principal and Family Advocate of Happy Valley Primary to organize a weeklong event where teachers, parents, students, and fellow CalFresh Healthy Living educators generously contributed their time and creativity to reinvigorate the playground. Utilizing Bike 2 School Day and Rethink Your Drink Day (highlighting the school’s new water bottle filling station) Happy Valley Primary adopted the theme of Bike, Hydrate and Stencil in order to pull in parent support and exemplify healthy living habits. Some parents even helped provide on-site day care, enabling parents with younger children to participate. With the help of 40 volunteers, 15 teachers and staff members, and 49 third graders, this extravagant team created an environment that encourages physical activity and interaction through play as a part of a healthy lifestyle.

Playground stencils included a physical activity course, bee maze, two food groups four-squares, five up-dated hopscotches, four wall ball courts with fruits/veggies wait-lines, four MyPlate tether balls,  footprint paths, fruit/veggie/shape activity circle, two ponds, targets, galaxy activity area and movement path,  Fruits and Ladders 100 charts, and a Kinder bike track area. These playground stencils provide opportunities that complement academic learning concepts and development of fundamental movement and motor skills for healthy growth and development. These skills and concepts lay the important foundation for youth’s future physical activity level.

School staff/teachers/recess coaches were educated on the purpose of the playground stencils and received a demonstration of the activities.  Stencil activity cards were also provided to school staff to increase access to unstructured and structured physical activity. Happy Valley Primary staff/teachers/recess coaches were provided extra training with playground rules and conflict management through Peaceful Playground Foundation. A CATCH training is scheduled for August 12th, 2019 for teachers, and staff.
This project highlights the importance of community involvement and engagement to support healthy behaviors and healthy choices. Healthy choices and opportunities at school lead to healthy students, parents, and communities.

See below for photos of the new stencils, as well as action shots from both Bike 2 School Day and Rethink Your Drink Day!

New review suggests research-proven ways to cut back on sugary drinks

Article Title:
Environmental interventions to reduce the consumption of sugar‐sweetened beverages and their effects on health

Summary:
Systematic review assessing the effects of environmental interventions on the consumption of sugar‐sweetened beverages and sugar‐sweetened milk, diet‐related anthropometric measures and health outcomes.

Researchers found moderate-to-low-certainty evidence supporting interventions that appeared to help people cut back on sugary drinks:
  • labels that were easy to understand and that rated the healthfulness of beverages
  • limits on availability of sugary sodas in schools
  • price increases on sugary sodas in restaurants, stores, and leisure centers
  • inclusions of healthier beverages in children’s menus
  • promotion of healthier beverages in supermarkets.
Strategies that raise the price of sugar-sweetened drinks were also supported by moderate-quality evidence.
