NYCETC Moderates Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Discussion on Skills Gap & Local Talent Development
Yesterday, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce hosted a panel discussion on “Addressing the Skills Gap: The Development of Talent” for local businesses, workforce service providers and higher education institutions. Moderated by NYCETC’s Executive Director Joey Ortiz, the panel featured Christina King (BSE Global / Barlcays Center), Liliana Polo-McKenna (Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow), David Fischer (NYC Center for Youth Employment) and Steev Usungu (Berkeley College). Amongst the range of skills that were discussed as necessary to enter and succeed in the workforce today, all agreed that being adaptable and learning how to learn are critical skill sets, with companies shifting toward hiring more generalists that are flexible and interested in many facets of a company or sector. Liliana noted that although NYC has a robust workforce system that many local businesses do not use as much as they could, “we are not doing enough as a city to support part-time workers (who are working part-time due to the fact this is a growing portion of entry level jobs and/or are the only jobs that their skills allow for) to upskill through advanced training to grow a career.” To that end, David underscored that the skills necessary to get a job vs. to keep a job are different; that workforce programs need to be teaching both skill sets; and that employers and jobseekers need to more clearly understand and appreciate these different essential skills if they are to thrive.
Discussion also centered around the growing and coming impact of automation on the workforce, with David cautioning about its larger negative impact on entry level jobs usually worked by low-income young people and women of color. Christina spoke on the fact that automation is already impacting, in some fashion, every aspect of all jobs, and in particular the communication and management systems we use and therefore expect others to know as an entry point. Steev spoke on the education and workforce system’s need to therefore be more adaptable to workers’ needs in this regard, including the need for more short-term training programs with lower costs than a 4 year degree but similar credentials and skills development.
