MINISTRY TO STATE NEWS

MTS UPDATES
We are back from Dallas, where our full staff attended our denominational General Assembly last week.

In addition to the opportunity to connect with long-time ministry friends and colleagues, we had a chance to introduce Ministry to State to many for the first time.

MTS led a workshop Tuesday morning on how the local church can serve Christ through serving those serving in government. Ferris Wheelers in Dallas was an excellent venue for our first ever MTS Thursday Lunch @ GA. We had over 30 guests join us for Texas BBQ and to hear updates on MTS ministry in D.C., across the country, and around the world!
CONNECT WITH US
COMMONS is the place to be in D.C. this summer.

Commons is in full swing, providing a community for believers, seekers, skeptics, and anyone in between who is serving as an intern. We meet weekly for dinner and conversation as well as Bible studies and we bring in speakers to share about their life, work, and faith. All interns from all offices and agencies in D.C. are welcome! Sometimes we even go to a baseball game together.

We meet at The Rez House in Eastern Market each Tuesday from 6:30-8:30pm.

NEW BOOK FROM OUR DIRECTOR
Washington, DC, is one of the most fascinating cities of the world. Is this because of its great power? Perhaps. Certainly, the city captivates because of those who are drawn to it. This tapestry of people includes the talented, the smart and those driven to change the world. The place, therefore, often breeds an exalted view of, or concern with, the self, that is, narcissism. Yes, it's possible for those who make the District of Columbia their home to fall in love with themselves.

MTS Director Chuck Garriott has spent much of his life helping people in positions of power think more carefully about the implications of the gospel for their work and their lives. What a gift, then, for Chuck to share with all of us the lessons he's learned over the years. I believe God will use this book to bless many who desire to steward their influence for the good of others to the glory of God. --

The Blessing of Beggars
by MTS Associate Director Michael Langer

Anyone who has spent any time in the city has heard their share of stories from numerous nameless, faceless homeless people. This is nothing new.

And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly. Matthew 15:21-28.

Jesus was only saying what the disciples were thinking when he called her a dog, because this encounter was as much about teaching the disciples as it was about blessing her. This is nothing new.

“Excuse me, I wonder if you could spare some change so I can make a phone call?”

Those were the first words Marc ever said to me. I heard them as I was walking out of McDonalds in 2007 while I was in seminary in St. Louis. They came from a disheveled, but very polite and articulate black man.

Like most, I, too, usually just keep walking. But this time I chose the road less traveled by, and it’s made all the difference.
