Mayor Tecklenburg and Councilmembers Mitchell and Gregorie joined the family, friends, and neighbors of Susie Jackson, the eldest of the Emanuel 9, to unveil the “Susie Jackson Way” signs recently installed at the corner of Chapel and Alexander Streets, where Ms. Jackson lived for more than 50 years. A fundraising campaign was announced for the “Susie Jackson Freedom Memorial Garden” to be built at the corner of Alexander and Calhoun Streets. The Garden will also highlight a site once called Cedar Court, a shortcut used by Ms. Jackson to get to Buist Elementary School and Mother Emanuel AME Church.
