Code Change Storytellers

Throughout the Code Change 3.96 process, student journalists from Parkrose and David Douglas High Schools have been documenting community meetings and engagement efforts. They recently shared the story of code change through their eyes, in video and in print. As the next generation of Portlanders, their perspective about civic engagement in this city is vital.

David Douglas Video Crew

"Just what does Portland want? That's what we wanted to know. Find out exactly what the code 3.96 committee is up to and what the Office of Community and Civic Life is doing to improve the lives of Portlanders. This is a student documentary."

The Bronco Blaze, Parkrose High School

"With food aromatizing the room and slinkies, squishy stress balls, and Play-Doh scattered across the tables around the room, the atmosphere was dynamic and laid-back at the Jan. 17 Committee 3.96 meeting at the Rosewood Initiative Community Center." Read More >>

What Do Community and Safety Mean to You?

Communities come together for many reasons—to heal, to call for change, to join a neighborhood clean-up, to eat popsicles. This year, Portlanders have the opportunity to come together and define what public safety means for them. Communities in other cities have followed this path, as identified in this article from the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. When neighbors get to know each other, they create more connected and safer communities.
