Throughout the Code Change 3.96 process, student journalists from Parkrose and David Douglas High Schools have been documenting community meetings and engagement efforts. They recently shared the story of code change through their eyes, in video and in print. As the next generation of Portlanders, their perspective about civic engagement in this city is vital.

Communities come together for many reasons—to heal, to call for change, to join a neighborhood clean-up, to eat popsicles. This year, Portlanders have the opportunity to come together and define what public safety means for them. Communities in other cities have followed this path, as identified in this article from the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. When neighbors get to know each other, they create more connected and safer communities.
